There's a new love story in town and it's name is Marcus and Maria. It's a new twist on a standard soap love story. We've had odd couples before: Alf and Audrey, Ashley and Maxine, Kirk and, well.. anyone really. Roy and Hayley were probably the least likely couple yet they've turned into Coronation Street's couple with the most stable relationship, probably ever!
Most odd couples don't last and Marcus and Maria probably won't either. There has been some worried reactions among viewers that this is sending the wrong message out. I think this will be handled appropriate, and it will be done honestly and with sensitivity. We should sit back and see where it goes before we make any snap judgements.
There's a bit more about how this happened and how I see it unfolding, over here.

Don't impose or preach.
My snap judgement - it's boring and silly and will go nowhere.
Soaps aren't one-off dramas where characters can develop in a planned and thoughtful way. Soaps can twist and turn depending on the writers' need for ratings, publicity or whatever. Not forgetting that Samia has just signed up for Dancing on Ice. So who knows what will happen to Marcus and Maria?
I think this storyline is being developed in a wonderful, sensitive way. It is examining the question "What is love?" in a meaningful way. And the two actors are handling it brilliantly. Charlie Condu has always been feted for his acting, but Samia has taken much criticism for hers. After this storyline, I hope her critics will be silenced, as she has been fabulous.
Maria will probably swan off to Ireland with Liam after Marcus tells her it's not going to work out..he loves her and all that but..he's gay. Hopefully this will end soon.
This is the first storyline I've been looking forward to in ages. No matter how long or short-lived, at least it's something interesting, that explores personalities and relationships - the origins of Corrie. BTW - I don't think encouraging us to wait to see how this story develops is preaching, just expressing an opinion, which is what this blog is all about.
This might seem far fetched but I think it is interesting the way the charecters feelings other than tose which are purely sexual are being explored. Many gay men who want a family life might find themselves in this situation.
It won't/can't/should't last as a romance, but I hope that:
a. they remain best friends forever; it suits them. Fast forward to Corrie's 75th anniversary, and they'll still be sipping wine and dreaming of retirement at the Rovers.
b. (in my fantasy) Marcus does find someone to enjoy that family with, they have a girl and one day she marries Liam. Fun wedding ensues with interesting in-law stories to follow (75th anniversary idea?)
Marcus does need a crisis that Maria helps him through, to balance things out. He also needs his own place; since he has a decent job, there should be something affordable nearby.
