Nightmare neighbours join Coronation Street

Residents of Weatherfield will need to watch their backs as Coronation Street welcomes the arrival of new ‘nightmare neighbours’ this month.

Mick and Lou Michaelis will arrive on the street all guns blazing, making life hell for anyone who dares to cross them.

With the Michaelis family moving into Mawdsley Street, at the back of Chesney and Gemma’s house, this will be the very first time Coronation Street have extended the drama across the ginnel.

Initially arriving on her own on the 12th February, Lou (Farrel Hegarty) immediately sparks up a friendship with Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) as they recognise each other from Bessie Street School, where Gemma’s quads and Lou’s two young daughters attend.

When Mick (Joe Layton) appears on 14th February, the audience will be shocked to realise his true identity - the man with the silver van who has been harassing Chesney (Sam Aston), who is none the wiser to who Mick really is.

After developing a friendship with the Winter-Browns, it’s evident that Mick and Lou are determined to create upheaval, starting with a prior connection to Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), leading to them exposing his secretive past.

Speaking of her exciting new role as Lou, Farrel Hegarty said:
“I’m delighted and so grateful to be joining the cast of Coronation Street.  I have genuinely been blown away by how ridiculously warm and nice everyone is.

“Lou is definitely an exciting character to play because she’s got good and bad parts to her, she’s a life force and full of beans. She’s a very colourful person  who likes to make waves and try to cause chaos. But she also has that strong family loyalty, especially between Mick and Lou, they are thick as thieves and will stick up for each other, even when they probably shouldn’t…”

Joe Layton added:
“Coronation Street is such an institute in British television and to get to walk down the cobbles in Mick’s shoes is so exciting. To also do it alongside Farrel is awesome - we are having great fun together and connecting really well whilst developing our characters.

“It also gives the opportunity to get a look behind the curtain of this huge machine and be a small cog within the big picture of Coronation Street and to work alongside people who take such pride in their work. It’s just a really happy place, friendly and welcoming. I’m going to relish every moment of it.

Kate Brooks, Producer of Coronation Street said:
“Chaotic and loud, Mick and Lou bulldoze their way into Weatherfield, causing absolute carnage for the residents of Coronation Street.

“Their relationship is volatile to say the least, but at the heart of it lies a fierce sense of family loyalty, and woe betide anyone who tries to come between them. Although they're the life and soul of any party, they're equally not everyone's cup of tea, and they soon find themselves at the root of some explosive drama.

“We're thrilled to introduce these new characters into the mix, and the cobbles certainly won't be quiet with this family around."

Well I am not remotely excited. Why do we need more conflict and horrible people?

Ah, so this is Ches' mystery van stalker!
I'm actually looking forward to this one. Neighbor feuds are more a part of everyday life than the murder and accidents that are more prevalent on CS these days.

Because it creates drama, that's why. No one wants to watch people saying 'pint please jenny' or see a chat about the weather in Dev's. Without conflict, there's no drama. If you didn't have it, viewers would soon complain!

It's ok, within 6 months they'll do a complete u turn and be decent people

I like the idea of a new neighbour and friends for the Winter Browns....do they have to be "a la Battersby?", probably not but it's going to make it more interesting. I like the idea that Kit already knows them, so it'll be nice to have another layer of his character peeled back.

I would rather see a chat about the weather in Dev’s and more humour than people being nasty to each other.

Don't watch Corrie or any TV drama or soaps but focus on comedies, if humour is your thing.Personally, I like stories and characters, and that does involve a level of conflict.

Having a chat in Dev's about the weather isn't a storyline, so why can't they do that as well as all the issue led drama? What's wrong with a mix of both?

Exactly anon @ 21.29. What has always singled out Corrie above other soaps is the humour in everyday situations. Mavis and Derek had some classic scenes.Think back to Raquel and the older women's Xmas episode and her French lessons with Ken. More recently there was Dennis Tanner's funeral - hilarious comments from Rita and Audrey. Mary's tales of her colourful past are great and David has been brilliant on Gail's love life. It tempers the drama and it's what has kept me watching for 60-odd years.
