Jane Hazelgrove interview: Bernie's secret baby bombshell

How did Denny's appearance affect Bernie?
It absolutely shook her to the core! She was completely surprised to see him and it was not a nice surprise at all. She hasn’t said an awful lot about him since she has been in the street but it was evident that she thinks he is a waste of space. Seeing him again is terrifying for her because he brings up all kinds of things that she's buried for a long, long time.

Was she surprised that even though Paul is dying, Denny was still up to his own ways?
Yes it was exactly what she expected. She knows who he is and he's not great news. And she knows she knows exactly what this man is capable of, which is terrifying, absolutely terrifying.

Does she understand why Paul wanted to try and maybe have some time with him? How did you feel about that?
She’s not happy. But then I think whatever Paul wants, she's got to try and accept that and let him do what he wants to do. Since Paul's diagnosis, she's got a lot to work out in her own head. She's not happy about the fact that Danny's around and wants to see him but she's got to let it happen and then pick up the pieces afterwards when it all inevitably goes wrong.

Was it Denny's appearance that made her start thinking about the past and about this child that we didn't know that she had?
It was Denny turning up and raking up things from the past and also the fact that Paul is terminally ill, she's counting down the months and it's brought back, so many things that she just doesn't want to think about. Denny is the only other person who knows about the child and he has set off the whole cycle again. She knows that he isn't going to be compassionate or sympathetic about it and also there's the potential for him to throw that bomb into the middle of the family and there's no room for any of that at the moment.

Prior to her starting this search, we see her having conversations with Gemma where she's apologising for a past behaviour,  why is she starting to reflect again on what sort of parent she was?
I think if you're constantly told that you're rubbish at something, you believe it, she has had years of knowing herself that she hasn’t been a great mum disappearing and just basically doing exactly what selfish Bernie wants to do. It is preying on her mind and she is thinking about her other son, she obviously can't tell Gemma, so she just ends up apologising for everything she has done without telling Gemma what is really going on.

She confides in Dev about giving up her baby. What prompts her to do that?
I think she just needs a pair of ears. He so so wonderful with her and he will allow her behaviour to a degree event when it is wrong. When she's made massive mistakes he's quite happy to do that and to be the voice of reason. But he’s not immediately empathetic about this and she has to explain why she gave her child up?

What did happen? Why couldn't she cope with a third child?
She had been with Denny quite a long time and they had the twins. He was a bully and quite controlling and she's such a free spirit. It was never going to work. Her and Denny were having a really bad time and they decided they were going to split up. She went out and got off her face and a couple of months later she’s pregnant , and it's quite apparent that is not Denny's. She thought she was going to be able to cope once the baby arrives but she already had the twins, Denny is no longer around and she has got no one. She was really really struggling but also still quite selfish I think. There's a certain selflessness with doing what she did thinking that this child would be better off with people who could give him a better life as well. But she still feels everyone would judge her.

Does she think she can really find him after all this time?
It's a bit of a needle in a haystack. I mean, it's sort of typical Bernie, isn't it? Let's just go knock on the door of everyone who's called Christopher Green of around the right age. But it is something she really has to do and nothing is going to stop her now.

If she were to find him, what is her dream scenario?
I think that they could all probably sit around and have a family dinner and that Gemma and Paul will be accepting of him, he of them and that we can kind of forget about the last 30 odd years. But of course, people are going to say he's a replacement for Paul, which just breaks her heart because she hadn't thought about that at all? That was not the intention. She just wants the family together. And also, she wants to be truthful with Paul and a major part of her life, one that affects him.

Bernie’s life is never straight forward is it?
No it isn’t and there are  interesting times ahead for Bernie If she doesn't find him then she's going to be sad. If she does find him, it could go one of two ways, couldn't it? So you know, she's adding an extra layer to an already difficult time for the family, typical Bernie creating more problems.
