Chris Gascoyne interview: Peter and Carla - the end?

Why was Peter so intent on helping Abi after the accident?

This was a genuine human instinct on Peter’s part. He knows Abi and he knows how fragile she can be, he was the one who found her trapped at the garage and he went to see her in the hospital just to make sure she was ok as he knew how serious it was. But when he saw her take something from the hospital trolley he knew exactly what she was up to and he took it upon himself to stop her making a big mistake.

Did he consider how and why it might upset Carla?

He didn’t really see anything wrong in what he was doing. He is a former addict and he really felt he was the person who should reach out to Abi, it was a deliberate attempt to deceive Carla he was just focussed on the situation and stopping something happening. When Abi decided she did need his help he was pleased she had  reached out. He still regularly goes to meetings and he knew that was the way for Abi to get help.

How did Peter feel when Abi made the pass at him, surely he must have thought there was a risk of that, they have history after all?

Because he doesn’t see ABi in that way anymore and he feels they have moved on from what they had , and because he believes she is happy with Kevin he really didn’t see that coming. That may be naive and he knows Abi well enough to know she is unpredictable but he was genuinely shocked and frustrated that this happened. He thought he was getting through to her and helping her but she saw it another way.

Was he worried that she had confided in Debbie?

He was furious, it could just have been brushed under the carpet and they could both have forgotten about it, as far he was concerned it was just a silly heat of the moment thing and meant nothing so there was no need for her to tell anyone. Peter stupidly promised not to tell Carla and that is where the problem started.

Didn’t he think it would be better if he had confessed to Carl about what happened and just stepped away from the situation?

Without a doubt Peter should have told Carla immediately and admitted he made a mistake trying to help Abi, but he thought keeping it quiet was the easiest route to take for everyone. Once Debbie had told Kevin ths she thought something was going on only to be followed by Abi and Peter walking into the pub together it is all downhill from here. Trust has been broken and Carla is furious.

He has told Abi he finds it helpful talking to someone who has the same addiction demons. Does he not want to burden Carla with those conversations?

In some ways he feels as though he is responsible for Carla and her well being so he wants to appear strong and in control, after everything she went through he doesn’t want her to feel as though she has to worry about him. The problem with that is that it makes it very difficult to have a full and honest relationship and when that breaks down it lays bare what else is wrong with their relationship. They love each other but in some ways they are codependent and Peter can open up to Abi without any feelings of guilt or shame.

Carla accused Peter of tiring of a normal relationship once she was back on an even keel so he went looking for the next damsel in distress. Is there some truth in that?

They both say some awful things to each other and Peter should not have brought up her sleeping with Jordan as he genuinely had understood that and forgiven it but the breakdown in communication makes them both say things they wish they hadn’t. Carla knows nothing went on with Abi but the fact that he opened up and spoke to her was possibly an even bigger betrayal.

This week they have a heart to heart and start to wonder why they can't speak to each other about their problems any more. Do you think Carla and Peter are strong enough to deal with another problem in their relationship?

There is no doubt that the love between these two people runs so deep, you can't go through everything they have gone through without being bonded forever in some way. That doesn’t mean though that they are not going to have problems along the way. Their personal issues and addictions and their codependency is always going to flare up at times of stress and strain and they will make mistakes. Whether or not they can push through this and come out stronger remains to be seen. These are going to be very trying times; the fact that they both have so many demons can bond them but it can also break them.

I'll be attacked for saying this! I really don't like Peter and Carla as a permanent couple. The way they are written means they only come alive when they are going through a drama and that gets wearing after a while. Just as it would if you had friends like these two. You'd get sick of them. Carla says that Peter can't do the normal day-to-day boring stuff of a relationship. That's true for both of them in that we don't see them doing *any* day-to-day stuff. They can't do humour like Tim and Sally. They don't have their own home which would give them opportunities to be on the same side of a conflict eg: neighbour disputes. The writers have lost the opportunity to make Peter and Carla a legendary couple by hitching them together. Peter should have married Leanne/anyone, Carla should never marry. The chemistry would have been electric between them because they could keep trying to resist the physical temptation, knowing it would never have a happy ending. They should split up now and the writers should give them separate storylines. Give Peter a mate to chat with in the pub. I could see Peter and Tim as a great double-act.

Agreed. The only storylines Peter and Carla can do are angst or an issue storyline for Carla and it is getting old and boring now.

Why should Carla never marry?

I like Carla and Peter together but we haven’t seen enough of them onscreen to warrant them suddenly being in crisis. Since Carla’s breakdown, they’ve been shoved into the background and forgotten about which has been disappointing to say the least. The writers haven’t given me a single reason why putting these two back together was a good idea – we’ve had zero romance, seen none of that sizzling chemistry, and have had no positive development (they're still living in their parent's homes for god sake!) – and now suddenly they’re at odds again. All last night showed me was that Peter hasn’t changed or learned from past mistakes because he’s still keeping secrets, still lying to her, and still trying to be everybody’s saviour.
Carla’s my favourite character on the show but I can’t help feeling like sometimes Peter holds her back. Bottom line is she’s too strong for him and too often she’s made into the victim just so he can save her.
I’d rather have Carla back to her old feisty self, with or without Peter.
I’m hoping the writers take these two forward in a positive direction and show them as a united front (for once). But if all this ends in an affair between Peter and Abi, then I hope Carla kicks Petr to the curb and never looks back.
Carla was better with Nick in my opinion. He was a businessman, just like her, and encouraged her growth, never stunted it (unlike Peter). And she genuinely seemed happier with Nick.

Am I the only one who thinks this Carla and Peter storyline is just fan-baiting for their fan base?

The show is just throwing stuff at them without a necessary reason, it’s just to cause drama

As a big Carla and Peter fan, I'm bummed they're being taken in this direction. Was hoping for a bit of happiness (at long last) but it doesn't seem like we'll be getting any. No couple can be happy on this show, only miserable (unless they're Gemma and Chesney).

I agree with all of the above, Peter and Carla only work well during a crisis. Always thought Peter was better with Leanne because they could do the "day to day stuff". We saw this back when they lived together in the Rovers recently. I got the sense in 2017/2018 that they were setting up for Peter to leave Toyah for Leanne after the Suzy debacle (as it was only kept secret from both of them), but I guess that they didn't want to anger the huge Peter/Carla fanbase so went with that instead.

I actually disagree with people saying Carla and Peter can't do the day to day stuff. Yes we don't get a lot of it nowadays but in the past they used to have lots 'day to day' moments, just hanging out, having a laugh, and that's when I liked them best. The little stuff. I wish we had more of those types of fun scenes between them like we used to cos the explosive stuff can get tedious after a while.

I agree.

Never was a Carla/Peter fan. As mentioned above, he held her back. I remember she paid for everything and gave him a share of the business after his went. I thought that would be the beginning of the end, a proud man like Peter wouldn't take free handouts and him working in to factory was just....wrong.

Yes they have electric chemistry but it needs more substance or else it would be boring. Clearly during these times when there's no touching we can see that, it really doesn't work.

I too liked him and Leanne. They worked and acted very well together and it was believable. I didn't mind Carla with Nick because of the reasons above.

I would like to see Carla regain some of her former character...she is a scrapper from the estate who has made good. Smart, beautiful, and far too good for the likes of Peter Barlow. Peter would do good to hook up with Abi, they're made for each other. Kev and Abi together....YAWN.
I love the character of Debbie, lets give her something juicy...like Ray from the Bistro...there's a match.

Sally and Tim are fast becoming THE couple of the soap...wonderful comedic timing and genuine chemistry...fabulous!

Let's see more of Sean, less of Ches and Jemma...maybe a little more Dev..and deffo some more EVELYN!! yay!!

As repeatedly reported on her. The older actors have not filmed due to Covid-19. Same for the under 16's. So nope, you can't have any Evelyn until Maureen Lipman starts filming again

I can't be the end already, they've only been back together five minutes!
