Julia Goulding interview: Shona and the aftermath of David's rape
What has Shona noticed about David’s behaviour?
David has become really distant with Shona; very snappy, very angry, short tempered. He is not engaging with anything but she is focusing on that he is not engaging with her, she is not seeing the bigger picture that he is also being like this with the kids, with Gail and with work.
Does she have any ideas about why their relationship has changed?
Shona thinks she is the problem, she thinks that he doesn’t want to be with her anymore and that he is just not telling her. So because of this she is not feeling great about herself which makes her snappy and moody as well because she feels like she is being lied to. David and Shona were very loved up over Christmas and this has literally changed overnight. She can’t, for the life of her, think of a reason why so she assumes it must be to do with her.
Tell us what happens when Shona decides to ask David why they haven’t been intimate with each other.
One minute David is snapping back at Shona, saying there is nothing wrong and the next minute he is getting aggressively sexual with her so she doesn’t know whether she is here or there. Shona is completely at a loss with what to do with him because every time she tries to come on to him he will kiss her really passionately then he will pull away.
How does she feel when David tells Shona he will follow her upstairs but instead he leaves?
She is so hurt. They end the evening on a nice note where they decide to forget all about their problems and just have a cuddle and yet he still doesn’t come up to bed with her so that is a nail in the coffin for her because she feels that he does not want to be in their relationship anymore.
What does Shona decide to do next?
Shona finds him asleep on the sofa and tells him to stop messing her about and that she can handle it if he does not want to be in this relationship. But he says he does which she thinks is really weird because he is not showing her that at all. She thinks that actions speak louder than words and when Shona says she feels like he is just going through the motions, he says that maybe it is best that she should leave and he tells her that he doesn’t love her.
What are Shona’s first thoughts when she hears that?
Oh, it is gut-wrenching for her. She saves face in front of him because she is so shocked, she can’t possibly believe that this is what he is saying to her. But he is so cold, he walks out the room and he slams the door so she takes her stuff and goes.
Does Shona really believe that this is the end of their relationship?
She really does love him with all of her being but he has turned around and said that he doesn’t love her and he’s looked her in the eye so she is very adamant that that is it, the end. She feels very stupid.
What has it being like filming these scenes with Jack?
It’s always amazing filming with Jack. When David and Shona are happy we have loads of fun filming those scenes but filming conflict, especially with Jack, we bounce of each other really well.
How do you take yourself out of the mindset filming difficult scenes like these?
We can fall in to it quite easily because Jack and I have a good relationship so it doesn’t take much to get to where we need to get to in those scenes. Afterwards we talk about random, silly things and that shakes it off for both of us.
What was your reaction when you first heard about this storyline?
It is an important issue and a very brave issue for Corrie to tackle. I had every faith, I didn’t question it in any way, because hard subjects are done with such sensitivity and proper justice. It is the aftermath that is the important story, the way David deals with what has happened and his mental health so I feel really privileged that I have been trusted with this storyline.

I really hope David never gets back with Shona...she is just so wrong and totally unsuitable for him. She's also made it clear she will welcome her murdering son back with open arms once he's out of prison - what would happen then? It's so beyond the realms of believability that David would ever have anything to do with her.
Why is she so wrong and totally unsuitable for him? Really don't get that comment. Who would be right and totally suitable for him? This young 19 year old apprentice that's due to start in the salon? I think not
It's a story arc that will end with Shona leaving. As it happens, I don't think David and Shona have much chemistry mainly because Shona is a very bland character. David works well with sparky, slightly loony personalities. It reminds me of Lloyd and the last love of his life, the physio's mother. That relationship was all wrong, too. If you buy into David and Shona atm, David is denying the reality of what life will be like when her son turns up. It won't be happy families so Shona will probably leave, anyway, at some point.
I would've thought it was obvious Anon 15:29 - she is more like his mother than his lover and trying to make David look more mature by growing a beard just doesn't cut it. Shona was just badly cast.
And Anon at 14:42 is quite correct, in reality David would never have anything to do (in that way) with the mother of his beloved wife's murderer. Come on, think about it, surely that is obvious!
Anon at 7:31. Totallly agree
Agree with Humpty and Anon 7:31. Shona is lovely and David is, well, David, but as a couple, they’re flat. She has more spark with the gal pal times she’s had with random street folk. He is more alive when he’s chatting with work mate Maria. If they split, I don’t think either would notice.
