Yesterday brought very sad news that Roy Barraclough has passed away. His Coronation Street co-star Julie Goodyear, who played his wife Bet Gilroy in the show, spoke to The Mirror to pay her respects to Roy.
Julie, 75, said: “I have no words to describe how devastated I feel. We were just like a married couple. We kept in close touch and spoke to each other at least two or three times every week.
“I will treasure all the happy times we had working and laughing together. Rest in peace Roy. I will always love you.”
Corrie executive producer Kieran Roberts dedicated last night’s episode to Roy, saying: “The fact that Alec Gilroy was at the heart of the show for so many years and was held in such affection by so many fans is a tribute to Roy’s genius, for drama as well as comedy.”

As has already been mentioned, I think that the period between 1987 and 1992 when Bet and Alec ran the Rovers together was probably the last golden era of the pub. With the possible exception of the fairly brief period when the Duckworths were the licencees there has never been the same humour on both sides of the bar since that time. Steve and Liz are ok but they are no Bet and Alec and certainly no Annie and Jack. I wonder what Alec would have thought if he was still running the Rovers when the Bistro opened up in competition! It will be interesting to see what sort of a publican Peter Barlow will make if he succeeds in buying the Rovers; I suspect a bit like Billy Walker who got up to various schemes on the side during the few months he managed the pub after his mother Annie retired.
