Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 21st March

Yay! A Jonathan Harvey episode.

The 'A' story in tonight's ep was the birth of Sarah's child, five weeks early, but it takes us almost the full hour to get there. First of all, Sarah and Todd talk about Billy (their son, who would be almost twelve by now), Sarah suffers labour pains in the florist and almost has her baby delivered by Mary, who's just popped in for "a conversation piece for an occasional table", but who has also seen One Born Every Minute, and prepares to scrub in as a substitute OB/GYN, much to Tracy's disgust, concerned that all the shouting will put off the potential customers. Fortunately, Sarah doesn't have the baby in "a bucket of half price daffodils", as the ambulance and a plethora of Platts arrive, bickering and bitching, until Todd does the sensible thing and persuades Sarah to have the C-section that the doctor wants to perform. Sarah, who is convinced that a Caesarian will lead to the same fate as Billy's, is not reassured when the baby is deemed healthy; she is worried that her her punishment for covering up Callum's death will be her son's ill-health. "Callum's always going to have the last word," she claims.

Eileen isn't bothered that Todd doesn't like her new fella ("Just because I can get a man and you can't") and Todd unwittingly fuels the rumour mill about Anna and Evil Phelan's "affair", to Anna's distress. I’m enjoying the Phelan/Eileen (Pheileen? Elan?) storyline now that Anna has some back-up in her war of attrition in the form of Kev, who sarcastically sends a bottle of wine over to Eileen and Phelan's table in the bistro. Eileen is annoyed by her fella's reaction but she doesn't want to let Kevin and Anna (Kanna? Anvin?) win. Poor Eileen! She’s been fooled by men before (Dennis, Jesse, Sean Hughes, her own son pretending to be Jeff-from-Dubai), but not on this scale."You can offend me anytime," she says to Pat, foolishly.

Marta, seemingly not needed as a witness in the O'Driscoll's trial, is free, safe, and back off to Poland, and Eva and Aidan are growing closer again. On a less positive note, the fallout from the O’Driscoll/Marta storyline is money troubles at the factory (is that déjà vu I can feel?) but its main thrust has been to put Eva into the spotlight. As Alison King is leaving, the soap needs a new “lead” female character and the point of this storyline (in my opinion) has been to make Eva a more rounded character, not just an airhead interested in hairstyles and handbags.

Caitlyn McGuinness is back and not happy about baby sitting Max and Lily who go full Jackson Pollock on the Platt kitchen, And Tyrone's £5 dole-out from Fiz doesn't go very far in the pub, and he vows to find extra work to pay off the Winter Wonderland debt.

The best part of the episode featured everyone's favourite gob on a stick, Gemma, whose preferred form of greeting is "Size of you, yer fat cow," but who nonetheless rescued Bethany from the bullies, despite Bethany's earlier accusation that Gemma wok-fries her hair.

And that's about it for Monday. See you next week!

Good heavens! Of course Sarah has a boy, so we can rehash the Billy baby story AND keep on dwelling about Callum! If she'd had a girl, there would be less connection with the past and it would give Bethany a whole new reason to go nuts.

Could it be that the new producer has said that she wants less of the Platts and more new families on the Street? Bethany's bullies and Sarah's difficulties with baby Callum probably signal the end of their time in Weatherfield. I'm guessing that Marion will take on the responsibility of Callum version 2, promising that this time she'll make sure he keeps on the straight and narrow. Bethany will be sick of Weatherfield, and she and her mother return to Milan.

As for Phelan's storyline, I can't say that I feel involved with any of the characters. They need to soften Phelan up a bit. He has to show an Achilles heel to become a more interesting character.

The rehashing of Billy and the emotional behavior and connection between Sarah L and Todd are what redeemed this story line for me... If just for a moment. Very nicely written and performed.

I loved seeing the softer side of Todd and the relationship between Kylie and Freddie is spectacular - unfortunately the rest of the ep should have stayed on the editor's cutting room floor (they probably don't do that anymore, but you know what I mean)

I really liked the connection between Todd and Sarah during these episodes. It showed how much baby Billy's death did affect Todd, something we never really saw too much. Tracy was like a yapping dog in those scenes in the flower shop, kept wishing someone would drag her outside and lock her out or something. Love Kylie and Freddie. I expect they can fly Marta back from Poland for the trial which wouldn't be for some months anyway and we won't likely hear about it.

I thought Eileen was more street smart than to fall for Phelan AND ignore what people around her have to say. I guess she's not the first to fall for a conman and make a fool of herself. But how will she feel when Phelan swindles the company from Jason?

BTW, I saw an older episode of Midsomer a few days ago and one of the guest stars was Daniel Brocklebank, the vicar on Corrie! The episodes air on PBS and BBC Canada.
