Won't questions be asked about Hayley's death? What will the doctor put on the death certificate?
Questions? Yes. That's why Hayley was so emphatic about Roy not touching the glass, and anything else Hayley used to commit suicide. She was trying to protect him from any implication in her death. It remains to be seen whether her precautions were sufficient to insulate him from prosecution. That's part of the whole debate over "assisted suicide" and the ramifications for friends and family. The irony is that if Roy had been allowed to help her, Hayley may have been able to live longer, since she wouldn't have to be concerned about her ability to do everything herself.
No doubt the doctor will list the cause of death as heart failure due to pancreatic cancer. Most people with terminal cancer are eventually relieved through increased morphine doses (yes, that kill them). I genuinely can't understand anyone who would rather their loved one suffered the prolonged agony of major organs shutting down until their lungs/heart stopped. Of course Hayley wasn't quite at that stage and along with the implications for Roy (as her witness), this is the basis of the controversy of this storyline.
As someone who watched their father struggle horribly through 7 weeks of indescribable pain and to finally die in misery after wasting away to a mere skeleton, I'd have helped him on his way if I could. There was never any hope for him to survive. His last ever words to me were "I am in agony". What a legacy hmmm? Don't judge until you've been there.
A beautifully acted and sensitively thought out story line; but was it really necessary to have the last minute drama of Carla and Anna breaking in to witness what should have been the oh so poignant farewell of these two salt of the earth characters, so very very beautifully acted? Was it? We didn't need an extra bit of drama, we were completely enthralled by these two who really had learnt the meaning of love.
