In all the tabloid and online hoo-hah surrounding Michelle Collins' northern accent as Stella Price in Coronation Street, the cast have denied newspaper stories saying they're unhappy with her accent on set.
Digital Spy has an exclusive quote from a Coronation Street spokesperson who has scotched the tabloid rumours. They said: "The cast and crew have welcomed Michelle with open arms. To say they are angry about her casting or her accent is simply untrue and upsetting for everyone."
This Corrie fans is loving Stella Price, whatever her accent, rates Michelle Collins as an actress and is looking forward to seeing more of her and especially of Karl, Stella's fella.

Dear Flaming Nora,
I think your points on Corrie are usually spot on. Not all the time, but more often than not. However, I simply can't agree with you at all with regards to Michelle Collins in Corrie.
I think it was a misjudged move and with respect to the casting crew, probably on reflection, built up into a media publicity frenzy and with little future as a Corrie favourite.
I'm sorry about the criticism, but feel that the majority of true and die hard Corrie fans will agree with me.
Well I'm also a true and die hard Corrie fan ;-) but I take your point. The actress has bever been Cindy Beale to me as I've never seen her in EastEnders so maybe that's why I'm quite accepting of her as Stella in Corrie. I do like the character, but I think Karl has more potential, he could be the new Jack Duckworth!
I am pleased to say I agree wholeheartedly with you Nora. I think she has the potential to be great!
I don't think accent should be a huge issue. Surely, there is some Londoners living in Manchester. But I suppose if everything else is really good, people got nothing to complain about - they'd complain about something like this. So, a compliment to Michelle, I guess!
I wasn't watching corrie recently but tuned in to see cindy a few days ago.
Now the programme is unmissable, great to see that awful northern accent at work.
Her accent will be perfect in a couple of weeks - when I was 12 I went to Birmingham for 2 weeks and arrived back in Dublin with a Brummie accent because everyone around me had spoken like that.
My sister, who moved home to Ireland in 1970 still reverts to a Manchester accent when she has a few drinks
The accent is fine, I think. Although I'm not a native, I've spent a fair bit of time in the Manchester area and I honestly wouldn't have said it was a southerner putting on a northern accent! There are quite a few variations of 'northern', so...
It'd be interesting to play a tape to someone without telling them that 'this is Cindy Beale putting on a northern accent' and see what the response is without the preconceptions.
Anyway, Sue Nicholls' accent as Audrey is a thing of wonder and I've never, ever heard anyone else speak like that! But this is just accepted as a quirk of the character. Poor old Sacha Parkinson, OTOH, who is (so I understand) the only cast member to actually be born and raised where Corrie is supposedly set (Salford) gets stick for her 'incomprehensible accent'! Go figure, as they say.
Wiggleroom - I totally agree about the accent! No-one has ever had a pop about David, Vera or Liz's non-Manchester accent, and as someone whose sensibilities are offended by the wrong accent, I actually think Michelle Collins is doing better than I thought after all the press. True, she sounds a bit more 'Yarkshire' than 'Manchistoh' occasionally, but the afore-mentioned stalwarts have been getting away with it for years!
And I agree with Flaming Nora too, I think MC will be great.
I was just really annoyed with the over-hyped, ta-da, bells and whistles announcements. Gives the poor woman a lot to live up to.
And never watch EE so she will always be just 'Stella' to me.
All this fuss is mainly because Michelle's real voice is so well known. There are loads of dodgy fake accents on the show, but those are accepted as character quirks because the actors' real voices aren't so well known. I think Stella has loads of potential and Michelle Collins will settle into the role.
i think michelles accent is great! personally i dont think her accent should be such a big ussue. Her acting is still amazing and i love stella! We know Carla runs over Stella but i really hope she doesnt die:-( i dont see why the papers are making a fuss out of it and saying that they are concidering kicking her off! i think if corrie do kick her off (which i very much doubt they will) then they are silly! my 2 favourite soaps are corrie and eastenders and usually i look forward to watching eastenders, but since Stella has been introduced i have been looking forward to watching corrie when it's on now because i just love the storyline between Stella and Leanne! Surely the drama in the papers will calm down soon and hopefully corrie and michelle arnt taking notice! her accent is fine! stop giving the poor woman such a hard time!! corrie best keep stella! i think this is one of the best storylines this year and it deserves better complaments and not people criticising:-)! this is such an interesting storyline and i really hope stella and leanne become mother and daughter again, Corrie can get so many good storylines out of it! Michelles character stella is so different to Cindy Beale! Cindy was a villan and Stella is so nice and caring! Corrie, i have to say, is so so so so much better now Michelle is there, i just love the storyline! Good work Corrie and Michelle!
