Today is the 49th anniversary of the first airing of Coronation Street - December 9th, 1960. It wasn't broadcast over the entire country until a few months later in March 1961and the rest, as they say, is history. This marvellous photo is actually from episode 4. At its peak, 19 million viewers watched Coronation Street. While the numbers are considerably lower now what with much more choices on the "dial" (remote?), Corrie is still at the top of the ratings consistently.
Some trivia for you about this episode... the book David has was Ken's, and was bought by him in a "rare book" store for a pound and his mother thought he'd have been better off spending that much money on new underpants! You can read a full summary of Episode 1 with a few pics over here.
