There's an interesting article in The Independent by Lucy Nichol who talks about Carla Connor's mental health breakdown storyline.
Lucy explains her role helping with this storyline. She says: "For the past six months I’ve been working closely with the team at Coronation Street on a storyline about psychosis. It’s part of the freelance work I do with the mental health charity Mind and its media advisory service. The service exists to promote responsible portrayals of mental health problems and the team works closely with a wide range of soap, drama, documentary and filmmakers.
The story is currently hitting the screens, and Corrie fans are seeing the usually headstrong character Carla break down following a death on her factory premises.
So far, so soap-like. But the programme is exploring the issue of psychosis in this story, and not in the usual, stereotyped kind of way.
Psychosis is still one of the most stigmatised mental health problems that exists. Movies tend to pigeon-hole it in the horror genre and people get it confused with the idea of psychopathy, mistakenly linking psychosis with violence. This is why it’s so important to portray these symptoms accurately."

Not a fan of Carla, so not looking forward to this storyline at all.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of clicking on so many images either.
I’m looking forward to this storyline. Guaranteed that Alison King will smash this; she’s already been laying the groundwork with little nuances here and there since the roof collapse.
ReplyDeletePsychosis being mislabeled and pigeon-holed in media/TV/Film is a real struggle for those who suffer/have suffered from it. From the article, it sounds like they really did their research on this and I think it’ll show through in the upcoming weeks.
Regardless of whether he sabotaged the roof or not, I think it will be interesting to see Nick's reaction through all of this. When Carla thought she'd killed Kal and Maddie in 2015 Nick was literally her rock and one of her only allies.
ReplyDeleteIt's also interesting to watch the changing dynamic between Carla and Kate. They never seemed to adapt to having a sibling relationship like Kate and Aidan or even Aidan and Carla.
I agree Anon 13:17. Nick’s scenes with Carla last night were so sinister.
ReplyDeleteShe assured him she wouldn’t drop anyone but herself in it. He continued to lay guilt at her feet, bringing Gary and Sarah’s kids into it.
She told him she couldn’t live with the guilt. He told her to try harder.
He boasted that while other lives were destroyed, his was fantastic and he loves it, followed by a thinly veiled threat for her not to ruin it for him.
I didn’t originally think he would be the villain, but after his scenes last night I’m starting to lean that way. I thought it would be Robert, especially as he pointed the finger at Carla (even though he heard the whole conversation between her and Nick) and then off he went.
Thinking more about it, it may be Robert that actually starts to lift the blame from Carla and directs it squarely to Nick, once he gets over his misdirected rage at her. I wonder if Nick will then turn on Gary too. It’ll be interesting to see if once the villain is revealed along with who sabotaged the roof, if they will get the same amount of vitriol that is being sent Carla’s way because, as we’ve seen in the past, it seems the residents use all their energy to vilify Carla only to completely run out of steam once the real culprit is exposed.
