Aunty Pam - did anyone ever like her?
Is there anyone out there who actually likedCoronation Street's Aunty Pam (played by Kate Anthony)?
Me, I could't stand the character. I've never liked her. She's nosey, a know-all who can't keep her trap shut for five minutes, and hides her own bitterness under a sanctimonious paper-thin veneer of: "I'm a down to earth woman who's only telling it like it is".
I really liked Bill Webster and in my opinion he deserves far better than this ghastly shrieking shrew. And what about that heart attack! One minute Pam is preaching about salad and stress levels, and the next she's increasing his stress by opening her relentless gob and having a go at anyone within a ten mile radius. No wonder he keeled over like a felled tree.
She couldn't let it lie, could she? She had to keep on venting her spleen even at Bill's hospital bed-side.
Nope. I can't stand the woman. Anyone else have any views on Auntie Pam?
I hate her she just can't mind her own business can she personally i would rather have bill engaged to audrey like he was before
ReplyDeleteI think she's one of Corrie's most underused character's. Just love watching her. Can't agree with your comments at all seapenguin.
ReplyDeleteI too am a down to earth woman I hope and I'm also saying how it is. We will have to beg to differ.
Well I love watching Pam - but you wouldn't be surprised by that after seeing my name!
ReplyDeleteGreat character and can be very funny and serious. I would like to see more classic Pam humour though a bit more.
A bit fed up with the nastiness going around characters. Nobody ever knows how to treat each other nicely or try to work things out. Then it takes an accident to make them see sense, which is stupid if I am honest.
ReplyDeleteI was fine with the character before, but now I can't stand her. And if all she is here for is to have a go at Kevin and complain about him, just bugger of and disapear forever.
I still like Pam but agree with the Pam fan that says we need to see her funny side again.
ReplyDeleteWe don't see much of Norris and Mary and Pam at her best is very funny indeed. Hope she gets a relationship with Tyrone again.
I presume that the scriptwriters have brought her back to keep her in, so do what's best for Pam - give her a shop and let's have a laugh.
She was okay when she first arrived but I can't stand all the hatred she has towards Kevin (personally I also hate Kevin) But she never treated Molly like that and it was as much her fault as it was kevins
ReplyDeleteBig Yay from me. We've had to much rubbish on The Street if my opinion is worth anything at all, but all the other Corrie fans I know seem to agree with me.
ReplyDeleteAunty Pam is a real character and we need to get away from all the storyline tags like gay, alcohol, murder etc. Don't get me wrong, I think these are important issues, but not necessarily handled on soaps for the sake of it sometimes.
Corrie is about real life and humour and we don't have enough humour these days on the soap and Pam cam give us that.
I actually like the way she handles Kevin as it happens.
To be honest, I could tolerate her when she was peddling her dodgy ham sandwiches, but she was completely OTT the other night. In a way I hope it continues as she could be a really good "nasty" character if it does!
ReplyDeleteI agree with thtr above comment. It would be good to have a 'nasty' but very strong female character and maybe Pam is the one to do that.
ReplyDeleteIf the writers get her going against characters other than just Kev it would be interesting.
But I do think she's funny too though.
Auntie Pam seems very real to me. Passionate, heart on her sleeve and, at times, very funny. The actress fits the character very well, playing her to perfection.
ReplyDeleteGreat actress..great lines. Yay for Pam. I really would like to see her and Bill move in with Tyrone..give him some stability. Kevin deserves to be told off in spades...and Sally...is she really that much of an idiot? No...Pam has a mind of her own and a gob to match. It'll be great watching her slinging the mud@@
ReplyDeleteAuntie Pam is a a fabulous character and we should see more, more, more of her; Her character is underused and could so be developed.
ReplyDeletePlease let us see more of Auntie Pam in future episodes...
As Frosty said in his previous post, Pam was quite a good characer first time around but she just disappeared without explanation, now she is suddenly back with venom and become another dislikeable character, she seems to have lost her momentum. That attack of virtriol on Kevin telling him he should be dead was unforgiveable. Is Kevin a rapist or murderer? No. He shouldnt have shagged his best friends wife but it takes two to tango and silly Molly was more than eagar from what I remember, so back off and get over it you poisonous old bag with your letterbox mouth, we have enough nasty characters already.
ReplyDeleteSeapenguin, I don't think I understand what you're exactly on about.
ReplyDeleteIn your intro and initial blog, you say you can't stand Pam, but then say she could be a good 'nasty' character and also liked it when she was do scams etc.
Are you saying you actually like the character but would prefer to see the writers give her a different angle?
I have to say that I think she is a brilliant character and and is very real indeed.
When she dicovered Molly and Kev at it, it was scriptwriting at Corrie's best and acting of the highest standard - for me anyway.
My husband and I as well as many of our friends would like to much more of Pam Hobsworth - she is a unique character and we need more like that in Corrie.
So it's a very big YES to Auntie Pam.
Hey Frosty - chill man. You may be taking this too far. You are entitled to comment on the way the character's script is written of course, but your 'letterbox' mouth comment is not nice at all and maybe you should keep it aimed at the character - not the actress, who is clearly a very talented person who does the very best with what she's given.
ReplyDeleteI always thought that Pam came in to replace Vera and she has demonstrated that she can carry a comic situation better than most. She's also proved she can tough it out with the best - but personally I prefer the more humourous approach - what has always appealed to me about Corrie is its mix of drama and humour - and I think the latter has been lacking over the last couple of years, to my mind, to the detriment of the series. With Pam there is the opportunity to build a great comedy based character - and obviously as actress who can carry it off. On the other hand, let's face it Kev deserves whatever he gets - he's been far too "teflon" for too long.
ReplyDeleteI agree with siziemm.
ReplyDeletePerfectly put and can't better that.
More Pam please.
Comic genius. Deserves a decent storyline
ReplyDeleteDidn't care much for her before she disappeared with her sandwich basket in hand, didn't think too much of her appearing again for Molly's finale, and now it's unbelievable that Bill could want to marry such a harridan as she's become.
ReplyDeleteMolly was no saint, and Kevin has done the best he could under the circumstances, and this from someone who's never been a Kevin fan either.
I have two words for you, seapenguin: Ena Sharples. Done.
ReplyDeleteWow, I think there are many corrie characters that we should be discussing way ahead of Pam.
ReplyDeletePam is far more acceptable than several others I could real off.
Keep Pam on screen please. Give her a proper storyline, contract etc and get rid of other unpopular characters.
Really like Pam and the more the better.
Get Aunty Pam fighting Kevin for custody of his son!!!! See some great acting and then Pam can move into the Street and we can get some humour into her character again.
ReplyDeleteWhere can I watch up to date cori. We are only only episode with Kevin living in the conservatory. Xmas actually. Saw a site before but forgot it. Please help I need my cori fix.

Cheers
I like her, think she's underused.
ReplyDeleteI like Aunty Pam, I don't think she's been given enough good storylines. She's shown her soft side with the proposal from Tyrone to Molly, her tough side with Tyrone's mother, her comedy side with tales of her past and scenes with Norris and carried them all off brilliantly. The writers should make her funny again and get her on screen much more
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify - I've never liked her much, thinking she was just about tolerable when she was selling sandwiches etc. - but she came across as truly horrible in the most recent "heart attack" episodes. Yes Anonymous - she could maybe be written as a really vicious Ena Sharples type, having a judgmental go at all and sundry. Could liven things up! I wouldn't LIKE her but she would be entertaining.
ReplyDeleteCorrie has a long history of strong passionate female characters and Pam is following in their footsteps. She has shown us many aspects of her character, funny, dry, nasty to name a few. The actress playing her is a great character actress and brings a fresh new element to the Street whenever she's on screen.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see more of Pam and am looking forward to her becoming a long term regular member of the Corrie family!
LOVE her!
ReplyDeleteIt is about time Corrie had some fun characters, there is too much misery on TV and she just adds the fun back into it! Aunty Pam rocks!
Well clearly a great deal more people like Pam than don't if this is anything to go by.
ReplyDeleteThat's good enough for me - she is fabulous.
She our favorite character and we've been watching Corrie for 40 years.

We like Aunty Pam - or we did when they wrote humour for her. Now there is an actress who can handle humour very very well. But now the writers are following the tiresome well-worn path of turning every older female character into a shrew. Yawn....
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to the writers who could write comedy? Did the PTB sack them all? They sure know how to be nasty to other human beings, but how about finding some writers who can deal with humour?
I was really looking forward to the return of Auntie Pam. But holy crap - I didn't think they'd bring her back as the shrew from hell!!
ReplyDeleteShe was wayyyy over the top with her screeching at Kevin. If I recall correctly, it was Molly who started the flirting which led to the affair. Kevin couldn't have an affair on his own - it does take two.
If they're going to make her into a screaming bitch, I'll be really disappointed. I wanted to see the humour that she brought to the street.
And Bill should run a mile!!

I just love auntie Pam!! She is one of my favourite characters - she is the link between everyone! I love all of her scenes as she brings every situation together with classic auntie Pam style and humour. I wish I could see more of her because she says what everyone else is just thinking and that means alL of her scenes Are interesting and unexpected and the reactions of the character and the viewers is genuine! Go auntie Pam!!
ReplyDeleteI was looking forward to the return of Auntie Pam but wowee didn't expect the tirade of nastiness that she spouted last week. There are enough nasty characters on the street right now without bringing her back to shout and screech abuse like she did. She said some hateful things and then expects Bill to go ahead and marry her. When he's back on his feet he should run fast in the opposite direction.
ReplyDeleteMolly left Tyrone that night, that's why she was in the shop. And why is Tyrone and Sally all the pally pally with Auntie Pam all of a sudden? She knew about the affair and didn't tell Tyrone or Sally! And then she found about the father of the baby and still didn't spill the beans! So she was tangled up in St Molly and Kevin's web as lies, was Auntie Pam, who has done nothing wrong ever in her life, ever!!
Again, Phil C's curse of doom on a likeable character.
Beth
Love her. More comedy though please - we certainly need it on Corrie and Pam is perfect for this.
ReplyDeleteLove her, love her, love her - but please more comedy Corrie. She is the best at that and brings something different to Corrie, especially as the great and missed Blanche is no more.
ReplyDeleteI too love Auntie Pam (even though she's not really an Auntie now!) and although her diatribe at Kevin was unpleasant and unfair, she blames him for the death of Molly, so her (over) reaction is entirely understandable. Treated correctly though it's easy to see she has the potential to be a classic "strong older woman" Corrie character.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind her IN SMALL DOSES. I don't think I could handle her full time. She's like Sunita's 'Aunties'. Alright for a couple of episodes, but anymore would make me turn off.
ReplyDeleteI agree with John McE.
ReplyDeleteHowever, she is an auntie, a great auntie to Jack now of course. Indeed, she and Kevin are the only blood relatives as I don't think Diggory will ever come back. He may be dead!
Now let's see some good storylines for this fab actress to get her teeth stuck into.
Someone mentioned a shop - is this true.
It would be great to see her going into business with Bill or maybe Tyrone, which would allow him to leave the garage and work with Pam. Now that would be funny.
I think I may be an unofficial member of Team Pam.
Aunty Pam simply the best character Corrie has thrown up for years.
ReplyDeleteCheryl says
ReplyDeleteJust thought I would say that I loved the recent storylines with Pam, Bill and Kev etc.
More of the same please.
Love Pam and Bill - they should be in Coronation Street much more regularly. A breath of fresh air.
I think she is great, Corrie could do with some different characters, I get fed up with the same old lot who have been it in for years, its like ground hog day, I mean how many times and Ken and Deirdre get married again.
ReplyDeleteCorrie needs new characters and Auntie pam is a great one.
Aunty Pam is great, but please, please writers more comedy and less crossness. Aunty Pam is played by a very versatile actress and I am looking forward to seeing some fun at the wedding rather than the usual tragedy!!
ReplyDeleteLeave Aunty Pam alone. She is a 'real' character and doesn't overact as some of them do. I think we need to see a lighter side of her, when the storylines get lighter, but until then, let her be.
ReplyDeleteI love Auntie Pam - she is a strong northern woman and that is what corrie has always been about
ReplyDeleteAuntie Pam is great!
ReplyDeleteCorrie needs a feisty woman that says what she feels :)
Go Auntie Pam!
HATE HER!
ReplyDeleteSo much!
One of the worst characters on the street.
She is good character for the show, and is she is hot in a milf kind of way.
ReplyDeleteThis seems to be a very popular blog/debate and it seems clear that the Auntie Pam's have won convincingly so my points probably don't count for much but .....
ReplyDeleteI think Kate Anthony's performance of Pam Hobsworth is superb. It doesn't matter what script she gets, funny or nastly, she makes the most of it and we need actors like this in Coronation Street.
We can't blame her performances, that's for sure and the good actors certainly stand out from the rest.
Personally, I would love to see some good old Pam classic humour. Remember the Picklegate instance and I was rolling around with her restaurant antics with Tyrone and Molly to name but two.
Let's bring Pam back properly and give to show some good old classic viewing again.
You never know producers ... it may give you the chance to win awards that mean something rather than the utter rubbish of sexiest female etc etc.
I get confused as to what Pam brings to the show but think this is mainly due to the fact that she is hardly ever in it! Cant she move into the street full time? She has the potential to be a great character. Personally I would love to see her serving at the corner shop- Micky
ReplyDelete'Big up for Auntie Pam', I'm already printing the t-shirt ! Love her xx
ReplyDeleteLove Auntie Pam though her return was a bit on the nasty side however I think Sally's explanation may have given her somethign to think about. Why hasn't Diggory asked to see his grandson Jack yet?
ReplyDeleteDear Seapenguin,
ReplyDeleteI think these kind of Love or Loathe posts are interesting exercises, as you never know which way it's going to turn, but I think on this occasion you have to admit defeat and even though you may continue not to like Pam, can you be magnanimous in the result and appreciate that considerably more Corrie fans (as far as this blog is concerned) Love Auntie Pam than not.
It would be really good to say fair enough and on this occasion Pam lovers win it by a mile?
Norris (yes that's really my name!)
Norris, the way I see it it's not a win/lose contest - I still don't like auntie Pam one bit, but I fully acccept that many other people do and it's interesting to read their views! we're all entitled to our opinions.
ReplyDeleteI'll be glad when she goes.
ReplyDeleteAnd as far as all these anonymous posts (and some of the others) saying they love aunty pam, they're all coming in from the same ISP address so I'm assuming it's the same person. I also know who it is but I won't publicly embarass them, just let them know I know. Just saying.
Hi Nora, There are an awful lot of people working here at our company at Pinewood Studios who work from the same ISP address - and we do all love Aunty Pam.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with that and we aren't set up for blogging so we are all annoymous. No embarrasment at our end.
Whether you love or loathe Aunty Pam, it doesn't look as though she'll be around for very long. As reported in another blog post, Kate Anthony is booked to perform in panto this Christmas - Snow White at the Buxton Opera House.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, Eric Potts (Diggory Compton) is appearing as the Cook in Dick Whittington at the New Theatre, Wimbledon, along with Dame Edna. That's two Dames in one Panto!!
Isn't the whole point of soaps to have strong characters who push the story along, do things we wouldn't, say things we wouldn't and be who we aren't?
ReplyDeletePersonally I think Pam lights up the screen whenever she's on. She's a brilliant actress and a great feisty character. keep her on forever I say.
Steve
I thought the whole point of soaps was to entertain us with characters who do and say the things we would love to say and do....
ReplyDeleteI think she is a great actress and a very strong character for the programme. She lights up the programme every time she's on. I hope she stays for a long time.
Hi Martin S,
ReplyDeleteKate Anthony has just finished a play in Manchester's Lowry Theatre and is back filming at Corrie this week and over the following few weeks too.
Then as you rightly pointed out she is off to Buxton as The Wicked Queen in Snow White before returning to Corrie sometime in the New Year.
Don't forget, Pam has a wedding with Bill to arrange!
