Coronation Street's marvellous matriarchs

The Mirror today has a maginificent seven rundown of their favourite Corrie matriarchs. Have a look at the list here - have they included your favourite?

I'm in agreement with most, but I'm not sure what Michelle Connor's doing on there... she's not been there long enough to be a matriarch. What about Liz McDonald and Deirdre Barlow instead?

  1. No Rita?! She's a true matriarch: took in John Spencer, Sharon Gaskell, Jenny Bradley and Sally Webster under her wing and everyone goes to her when in need of advice or comfort. Raquel and Michelle, they don't match up to her!

  2. It was a bit tricky the way the article started off, but it mentions "Emily" and "Rita" as having been awarded the MBE last week and then goes on to say here are the panel's Other choices, so Hopefully they were included!

I agree with the other choices, but also wonder why Michelle was chosen, unless to represent one of the younger generation of 'matriarchs', somehow not a word I'd use to describe "Michelle" !

  3. Someone needs to give the Mirror a definition of Matriarch. Raquel? Michelle? Bet Lynch??? Annie Walker, Hilda Ogden, Elsie Tanner and Vera Duckworth, most definitely matriarch material. Blanche Hunt anyone? Audrey? (children, grandchildren, great grandchild) Matriarchs are the head of a family not barmaids and are generally over 60.

  4. Agree with you Tvor about Blanche and Audrey, they should definately be on the list in place of Michelle. The Mirror seriously need to get their act together!

  5. Not Raquel, or Michelle. I'd put Bet in there though - she's got that mighty matriarch-type look, even though she might not be one, technically...

  6. Good heavens, Michelle Connor????? If not true Matriarchs by definition, the others have been / are truly strong and memorable characters. "Elsie Tanner, look out."???????? Poor POLLY HUDSON needs someone to help her research the history of this venerable Kitchen Sink Drama.

  7. Its a pity journos dont get a basic concept of English language before they publish articles. A Matriach is a head of a family. Raquel wasnt a head of a family and neither is Michelle, I cant understand the silly obsession some people seem to have with the tarty barmaid, that is rarely in it these days that she is one of the Corrie greats, she isnt.

  8. "Tarty Barmaid".
I can almost hear you say that, "Doris Speed" :)

Polly Hudson and her panel did get more than a few answers to this particular question wrong.

They must have mixed up "Matriarch" with memorable or notable female characters of their choice, IMO.
