Julia Goulding interview: Shock for Shona and son

How is Shona feeling about making a fresh start with David if Gail sells the house?

Shona is the beacon of positivity in this difficult time, she’s trying to stay positive for the kids and for David who has been really down about it.

Does she genuinely feel positive or just trying to keep it together for the family’s sake?

I think she does believe what she’s saying, but it’s probably a bit of both to be honest. They’re embarking on a new adventure, they don’t know where they’re going to live, but Shona’s doing a lot to try and stabilise their future while David spirals. is She is making arrangements to look at flats and houses, remaining positive as ever.

Remind us about the last time Shona saw her son Clayton in 2020, and does she ever think about him?

After her memory loss he tried to make her believe David was a bad man and she was in a very vulnerable position. Years ago David and Shona made a pact never to speak about Clayton. She may visit him, she may not, she may think about him, she may not, we don’t ever see it on screen because they’ve promised each other they wouldn’t speak about him. But I think he is more present in her thoughts and in her life than the audience are led to believe. He is her son after all and she still loves him even after everything he’s done.

Has Shona made her peace with that decision?

Yes. He’s serving his time, he’s safe there, he’s away in a little box. And I think that is good enough for her. At the moment she is feeling positive about things, Shona and David even decide to start trying for a baby which is lovely, to solidify their relationship with each other, which raises the stakes.

How does Shona feel when she learns Clayton is in hospital?

The police visit her at work and tell her he is in hospital. She races home in a blind panic, is upset and apprehensive to even mention Clayton in front of David. Also they’ve got lots going on in the family, but seeing Clayton becomes her priority so she races to hospital. She doesn’t think twice about that.

Describe what happens when she gets to the hospital?

Clayton doesn’t want to see her and is very angry. Unbeknown to her she has been contacted by him and the prison, so she is very confused. He screams at her to get out, she can’t understand why and just wants to be with her son. At this point she knows he has tried to take his own life but cant work out why and why she wasn’t told. It is scary, it brings back a lot of the memory loss stuff.

How will Shona feel when she finds out David was in touch with Clayton and had a hand in what has happened?

Jack and I are very much on her own characters’ sides in this, we’ve had barneys in the green room about who’s right, David is to blame! When Shona finds out her husband has been gaslighting her and had a part in Clayton trying to take his own life, I dread to think what she’s going to do. But I don’t think she’ll take it lying down!

How will this affect Shona and David’s marriage?

Trudging through treacle is probably a good analogy. There’s going to be a lot of anger and pain, a possibility they could destroy each other. There’s a lot of change already for David, his mum is leaving, the house might get sold, stress with the stolen money which Shona doesn’t know about yet, it's like living in a washing machine! The sad thing is they’ve been so solid for so long Shona is David’s final crutch. But he’s destroyed it himself in my opinion. I really am Team Shona in this!

Are you pleased to be exploring Shona’s past?

Clayton is her son and is always going to be part of her life. If it causes drama then all the better, I love it. And it's also really nice to see Callum when he comes in. Let’s keep the drama going for David and Shona, otherwise it’d be very dull wouldn’t it?

How will the Platts cope without Gail?

I think in the immediate future not massively well! The Platts are such a strong family it's heart breaking we’re losing our matriarch. But they’re strong enough to get through it together, it’s a new chapter and an uncertain time for the Platts, but Gail has cemented such a good foundation for the family they can only survive it.

  1. Oh no! Now Clayton is yet another reformed villain. Haven't David and Shona suffered enough?
