Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 3rd September

I like to read the previews before reviewing an episode and I have to say that my heart sank when I saw that the A story tonight was going to feature Jude and Angie - I find myself forgetting what their storyline is whilst I'm even watching it. I enjoyed the original storyline of Mary reaching out to her long lost son (mainly because it gave Patti Clare the opportunity to show even more of her acting chops), but since J&A moved in permanently, my attention span started to wander, even during the quite amusing fish scenes. Angie could be alright given, say, a torrid affair with Adam Barlow, but Jude....I'm not sure if it's the actor, the writing, the direction but I nod off during every scene he's in.

Anyway, it's vow renewal day, and to make the episode come in under budget, the ceremony takes place in Speed Daal rather than the Mill that Mary booked but failed to pay for. Mary is in full autocratic mode, like Napoleon in a fascinator, arguing with the celebrant and organising (shouting at) the guests. Angie arrives and is unimpressed, as you might imagine from someone who wants to split up from, not renew her love for, her husband. Hey Jude, don't make her sad, take a bad idea and make it better:- he tries to persuade her that it's all a laff and Angie goes along with it, until she finds out Jude knew about the arrangements all along and she announces the end of their marriage to the assembled crowd of freeloaders and hangers-on guests. Roy approaches Jude in the nature garden to commiserate, but gets stung by a bee, which it turns out he's allergic to. Fortunately, Dr Ali is passing, and injects him with an epi pen but Jude doesn't let this get in the way of being (pretending to be) the hero and he doesn't 'fess up, even when Dr Ali comes into the pub, where everyone (including Angie) congratulates him. Winner of this week's pants on fire award?

In between reminiscing about ITV Saturday night programmes of yesteryear, Carla discovers that Sinead has used off-cuts from the factory to re-line Cathy's coat. Fair dos, if you're using a machine, premises, electricity etc, you shouldn't be nicking the materials as well. Daniel, who's full of the same Barlow charm as Ken or Peter, persuades Carla not to be too hard on Sinead and they exchange chaste cheek-kisses, to Sinead's chagrin. She confronts Carla (has Sinead forgotten that it was la Connor who got her and Daniel back together in the first place?), but the confrontation is cut short when Sinead starts to bleed. Carla takes her to the hospital, where Sinead is taken for blood tests, but is told that the baby is fine.

Tommy O! Tommy O! He's back, but I'm afraid that I'm more impressed by his re-appearance than Jack, who's decidedly blasé about it. Unfortunately, Ruby and Hope (Rope from now on) asking Mr Orpington to play football with them reminds Jack of what he has lost. Maybe an off screen trip to Legoland would've been better. Anyway, the party has some purpose, which is to persuade Ty to attend his late mum's will-reading and thus set up a new storyline.

And finally, Tyler has his day in court, and gets off with a Youth Rehabilitation order, but later on, the Barlows find out that the bad lad posted a racist, sexist and homophobic video on Facebook Friends Connect and has been hauled back to chokey. So that's the end of that.

  1. Except, that isn’t the end of that, is it? Not if they’ve cast Tyler’s mother.

You’re not wrong about Jude, Rachel. And I’m not sure about plans to make his character go dark - it could come off as just hilarious.

  2. I've been enjoying Corrie lately but these episodes were terrible. The timings in them felt all wrong, like some scenes get too much time (ie any with Jude it Sinead in them), and some were rushed like Roy getting stung and the conclusion to the Tyler thing. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right mood for it last night, the only saving grace for me was Hope and Ruby who are always fab.
