Kayla Clifton - Villain or Victim?

Guest Blog post from Matt Johnson who is on Twitter @unitedkanamixer

Last night saw Kayla Clifton finally learn the truth, that her darling dad Neil is actually a monster - once she’d tied Bethany up, slapped her a few times and pushed Craig’s OCD to breaking point. However, is she an out and out villain, a victim of her father in a different way, or something in between?

I certainly don’t think she’s an out and out villain because there have been moments this week where you can see she feels bad about what she’s doing. She even says to Bethany ‘I don’t want to hurt you’ and the look on her face when she left the garage suggested she knew what she was doing was wrong.

Before Craig arrived and played her the recording I got the sense that she knew Bethany was telling the truth, but simply didn’t want to believe it. After all, nobody would want to believe that their father, who they idolised, was capable of the things Neil has done.

Some people have wondered if Neil has also abused Kayla but I think he has simply taken advantage of the close relationship they have, as well as Kayla’s loyalty, by feeding her lies knowing that she will believe whatever she tells him. All that said I don’t think she should completely get away with everything she’s done- as she seemed to at the end of last night.

While I think Kayla should face the consequences for what she’s done I hope this isn’t the last we see of her as Mollie Winnard is a very talented actress who has played the role brilliantly. Hopefully we’ll get an idea once she comes back from holiday.

So to sum up I’d say Kayla is somewhere in between, but while she’s done some awful things I’d say she’s more victim than villain.

  1. The finale was too rushed for me. Would have been interesting if Bethany had faltered for a moment and almost lied about Neil in order to escape a beating. Jess said they'd had reports about Kayla threatening Bethany/Craig. Who from? The actress who plays Kayla is excellent and very believable. I don't think Neil abused her; it would be part of his twisted moral code that his daughter was out-of-bounds. I don't want her to stay on the Street and be rehabilitated. We've had that far too many times: Gemma, Kylie, Becky and now probably Abi. The case against Kayla would be hard to prove. Anyway, she might only get a suspended sentence and an order to stay away from Bethany. She needs serious counselling and her punishment will be living with the knowledge that her adored dad is a monster.

  2. What???

A rapist's daughter seeks out, targets, kidnaps and beats his victim, after having previously manipulated her freind's mental health problems and causing him to have a breakdown.

Yes, she "felt bad about what she was doing"...?

Sorry, no. Kayla is not a victim of anything. She's the perpetrator and in real life, the law would come down harsh on someone who attacks a child abuse survivor in such a way.

She's beyond salvation. She requires prosecution, jail time and then should never be seen again, regardless of how well the actress performed.

Corrie is morally bankrupt at the moment.

  3. I also don't see Kayla as a 'victim' as she knew what she was doing, leaving the gas on which could have caused an explosion killing Rana,Kate Craig and possibly the neighbors, nearly drove Craig to the brink and now kidnapped Bethany, all crimes that should lead to severe punishment.
First we have a male rapist getting away with his crime,Eva being portrayed as a victim for giving away her and Aidan's child [without his consent] and getting away with it so no Kayla should not get a free pass because of who her father is.
I agree with Ms Page that Corrie is becoming morally bankrupt with people getting away with questionable crimes.

  4. I think Kayla is awful. A horrible, stupid, naïve little girl. Not a victim at all. She is the engineer of her own designs.

  5. Ok I have to take issue with this idea that Kayla kidnapped Bethany. Bethany came round to Kayla's house, saw Neil's photo and Kayla knocked her out in a panic and held her hostage.
