Happy Easter! Hope you've had your fill of chocolate and are now ready for a big dose of
misery drama. The cops are on the cobbles, interviewing the residents about evil Phelan's evil deeds. Everyone is affected: the Platts, the Nazirs, the Grimshaws, the Metcalfes, the Windasses (what's left of 'em). Nicola turns up to realise that everything she thought about her dad was true and even gets some sympathy from Sarah (who seems to be wearing Bet Lynch's leopard-skin cast-offs). Eileen's still not telling about her role in her husband's demise, but the police, finding a fake passport and €56,000 on the fishing boat, arrest her on suspicion of Phelancide. The Corrie residents are on the same page as the cops, even those who have been in the same situation (Tracy, Gail). Steve says she'll be fine, which is proof that Eileen'll be the latest in a long line of falsely-accused Weatherfieldians, EXCEPT Eileen couldn't have killed Phelan because - SURPRISE - we end the episode with Phelan sewing up his injuries in an Irish B&B. Blinkin' flip!
Also at the cop shop, Craig finds out that Neil is appealing his sentence. Bethany says she won't go back to court, which causes argument in her family. David over-relates and ends up shouting at the remaining Platts. "You're going to stand there and let her experience it again and again." D.C. Lee fetches up and tells Bethany that Neil has only
lodged an appeal; it is yet to be approved, and then tells Craig that he wasn't professional and he has to take time off or be suspended. This sends young master Tinker off into a spiral of OCD symptoms and he yells at Bethany when she pops 'round.
Shona tries to talk to David, asking him why he is so angry and pointing out that they haven't slept together for a while. David claims that it's because of his family, but when Shona suggests they go to bed and just snuggle, he grabs his coat and leaves.
Meanwhile, Sophie fails to get a job. What happened to our Soph? She used to trot confidently around the mechanics with her clipboard, swinging her shiny hair and swishing her cape, and now one knock-back from Sister Self-Righteous of the Connors and she goes to pieces. Aidan gives her a pep talk and tells her that it will go right for her next time - so presumably she'll be working at the factory next week.

We'd all assumed Phelan hadn't died but I'm relieved that we didn't have to wait for months for him to reappear. That would have been stretching it. Eileen is guilty of attempted murder so she won't be innocent if she ends up in prison. Right punishment, wrong crime. Poetic justice for both of them although Phelan is going to recover quicker. Re: Tracy, the writers have gone back a stage with her. We were told, either by the actress or the producer, that Tracy had moved on and was no longer the spiteful cat feuding with Carla. Didn't last long. Now she feuds with Leanne and I really don't think even Tracy would accuse a very young child of being 'thick'. Not unless she's going to have a storyline about adult diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome. She's got many of the characteristics, and we thought she was just a nasty person. Again, new Tracy wouldn't have sat in the pub saying the most outrageous things about Eileen. She might have had a bitchy conversation with Beth but tonight's scene takes us back a couple of years. I wonder how Kate Ford feels about it. She has publicly said how unhappy she was about the way her character was stagnating.
ReplyDeleteMore Phelan? I think I've lost the will to live.
ReplyDeleteI bet he's going to make good on his promise to kill Todd and get rid of him off-screen, then come back to finish the others who have "wronged him" (Eileen, Gary and Nicola).
ReplyDeleteThen he'll die for good (hopefully).
My sentiments exactly popcorn. It's dragged on long enough
ReplyDeleteSo with the boat containing Phelan's cash and belongings left in Whitehaven, did Phelan swim to Ireland?! Let's hope they wrap this up quickly and that the soap police at least circulate his picture in Ireland, since they know he was heading there.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree about Tracy. I was only thinking last week how much more credible the less extreme Tracy was...
Sophie's job interview was ridiculous. She has no qualifications or experience of restaurants or management, just a few GCSES. Why can't she go to college or get on some sort of training programme, like normal people?
I absolutely loathe Phelan but in one way I am glad he did not just get a quick and easy death by falling off the cliff. Perhaps now there is the chance that he will get a proper punishment and will eventually be tried and imprisoned for his crimes, although this will probably not be anytime soon. It seems that TPTB want to drag the whole Phelan saga out for as long as they can even though it has already gone on for too long. He will probably return to Weatherfield first in order to seek revenge on those who have betrayed him including Eileen. I wonder if she will be eventually be imprisoned for colluding with Phelan's crimes and ends up in prison with Anna, where they both devise some way of bringing Phelan down for good? It seems that anything is possible with Corrie these days. The fact that nothing was said in the media about Phelan filming his last scenes did sugggest that he was not going to die just yet. I just hope the whole saga doesn't drag on for too long yet but I suspect it will be fairly late in the year before Phelan makes his final appearance.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping it's Corrie's "big week" that the storyline is wrapped up. They always have huge storylines for the week of the live finals of Britain's Got Talent at the end of May. Also, these episodes wouldn't have been filmed just yet, so hence no mention of Connor filming his final scenes
DeleteI love Phelan. Best villain eva!
ReplyDeleteI'm with ya on that, anon. I adore Connor Macintyre's acting. He makes Pat Phelan downright fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteSophie, with her commonsense and strong values, would make a great police woman. And having a new Police station set would make that a logistically logical career move
ReplyDeleteYour idea would make more sense than Craig who has OCD, two criminals for parents and froze at the scene of Kylie's murder wanting to be a cop instead of an artist.
DeleteOf course Phelan wasn't dead it's not BGT week - they need to drag him out longer.
ReplyDeleteMissed Norris in this episode, he'd have been brushing the street and been in full on nosiness of everything. Tracy's nastiness didn't do it for me especially now she's dating Steve - they've made him a bigger idiot for going back with her.
Alya is reacting with much more grief at the loss of Luke, who she was seeing for a short while, than she did for her own father. Strange.
Sophie joining the police - good idea.
ReplyDeleteCraig's OCD has only appeared since he became a special constable, plus I can't see him chasing after many villains. I'd like to see him pursuing his artistic ambitions.
Steve's reunion with Tracy only worked because her character had been toned down. His clear embarrassment at her rant in the pub could signal the beginning of the end.
Alya's over-grieving for her boyfriend of 5 minutes - please stop!
I used to like Craig but now I just find him annoying. Nothing to do with the OCD, just the way he obsesses over Bethany and doesn't seem to get that as a 'policeman' he can't drag his private life into his work.
ReplyDeleteCarla doesn't like Alya. Aiden givens Sophie a pep talk. Are they going to replace Alya with Sophie?
ReplyDeleteWhen Alya first came into the show she was a girl with a degree, ideas and get up and go. Yet another character with potential wasted.
ReplyDeleteRapunzel, love the PC Sophie idea although I would hope she’d work her way into the detective squad - she’s smart and they’ve needed real help for years.
ReplyDeleteI am among those who knew Phelan survived, although I think they brought him back a little too quickly. Would have preferred a shadow watching the tv news report of the Eileen Phelan trial, mysterious happenings around the street and a big reveal to the tea and jammies under a comfy quilt we were given. Oh well, at least we have a chance to tie up loose ends and, hopefully, serve up an icy dish of soap justice.
