Happy Birthday to Barbara Knox

Today, September 30th is Barbara Knox's birthday. She's a Coronation Street legend and a star in every sense of the word.

How old is she? Well, for a lady of a certain age, it might be rude to reveal it publicly. But if you'd like to know the year she was born, it's here.

Barbara first appeared in one episode of Corrie as exotic dancer Rita Littlewood in 1964, returning in 1972 as Rita Bates, common-law-wife of violent Harry Bates, who looked after his two children, Terry and Gail. After a short break she returned and has been playing Rita ever since.

Happy Birthday Barbara!

Cathy's nephew Alex returns to Corrie next month

There's a lovely interview in the Bradford Telegraph and Argus with Liam Bairstow, who plays Cathy's nephew Alex on Coronation Street. Liam is the first Down’s Syndrome actor in Corrie's history.

Liam says: "Alex is a bit of a romantic person and likes figurines on wedding cakes. He's a cheeky lad who likes to go to the pub and is a smooth talker with the ladies. Roy’s Rolls looks a lot bigger on TV than in real life, the set is really small. When I was in the Rovers I thought one of the walls was real - until it moved."

The 28-year-old has been picking up tips from cast members. "I enjoy working with the other actors, they’re all really nice," he said. "Beverley Callard who plays Liz McDonald and Debbie Rush who plays Anna Windass helped to calm me down on set. If I started to struggle, they helped me with my nerves.

"In a scene in the Rovers the director was teaching me how to pick up a pint glass with my right hand while reading someone’s palm at the same time. It’s great to be around so many professionals."

Liam, of Bradford theatre company Mind the Gap which trains actors with disabilities, landed his Corrie role after taking part in an ITV acting workshop.

"I went last year with about 15 other people, it was called Breaking Through Talent and I met lots of Corrie cast members. We learned how to perform in front of a camera and work with different camera angles. All I knew was that it was a workshop. A few months later me and my mum were called into a meeting at Mind the Gap and I was told I had got the part. I was buzzing! I’ve watched Coronation Street since I was young. My mum is a big fan, I've grown up watching it with her."

Liam is currently in a new stage production, Contained, premiering at Mind the Gap's Manningham studio next month prior to a tour. Contained is on at the Silk Warehouse, Lister Mills, on Friday, October 16 at 1pm and 7.30pm and Saturday, October 17 at 7.30pm.

Liam will be back in Corrie on screen as Alex in October.

Most iconic Coronation Street pictures of all time

Yesterday, we blogged a story to say that Coronation Street had been voted the ultimate ITV programme of all time.  And in that blog post, we used the picture of Deirdre behind bars. It's surely one of Coronation Street's most iconic images, ever.  This has started me wondering which other pictures are the most iconic images of Corrie throughout its history?

We've had blog posts in the past asking for fans' favourite and most iconic Corrie accessories - Hilda Ogden's curlers won that one!

But if you had to choose one image, just one, from the whole range of publicity pics that Corrie have ever produced, which one would you say is the most iconic?  Which one picture, for you, sums up everything you love about Coronation Street?

I'll keep an eye on your comments to see if I can produce a blog post in a few days time with the pictures you feel are the most iconic.

Who are your top 3 current favourite Corrie characters?

Who are your top three favourite Coronation Street characters, right now, at this moment? Having posed this question, I was forced to think of my own favourites and realised they could change from episode to episode. Such is the fickle world of soap - and me!

But if you had to choose, who would you say were your absolute top three favourites at the current time? The way I'm helping myself come to my top three decision is by imaging how gutted I'd feel if I read that they were being axed from or leaving the show.

And so, here are my current top three favourite characters, the ones that light up the screen for me.

Which three would you choose?

What do you think of Corrie's Gemma Winter?

I'm a big fan of Coronation Street's Gemma Winter and have already written a blog post putting forward my reasons why I'd like to see more of her in the show.  You can read it here if you'd like to.

With Callum missing, Gemma endeared herself to me even more this week. Her vulnerability when she told Kylie she had nowhere else to go was touching.

However, not everyone is a Gemma fan and she's provoking some fierce reaction online.

What do you make of her?  Vote in our poll below.

"If you build it, then they will come" - but will Tim turn up?

Will Tim turn up at the wedding next week on Coronation Street?  I do hope he does.  Sally seems convinced he will, quoting a line from Tim's favourite film, Field of Dreams.  "If you build it, then they will come".

But will they?

This week's Inside Soap magazine says Sally won't give up hope on marrying Tim and we've all seen the preview pictures for next week's Corrie showing her standing at the altar in her wedding frock.

Inside Soap says that Tim tells Sally she'll be a laughing stock if she attends the wedding but Sally's resolute.  She gets dressed up in her wedding outfit, goes to the Bistro but everyone is left feeling sorry for her.

Eventually, the mag says, the heartbreaking truth starts to dawn on Sally as time drags on and there's still no sign of Tim.  And as her awkward wedding party start to leave, Sally's left on her own.

Will Tim turn up in the nick of time or has Sally blown her chances with Tim? I wonder...

Vote for your favourite all-time Corrie males!

Now then, over the last three years, I've conducted different polls - from fave characters and couples to fave accessories, moments, double acts etc.

The response has been great every time and I think it's time for another one. This time, it's a poll asking for your favourite all-time Corrie males.

The poll contains 30 Corrie males from 1960 to the present day. You can vote for as many as you like plus you can enter your own names.

The poll will be open for a few weeks and then I'll count the votes and eliminate the bottom 5. I'll then do another poll and you can vote for two out of those 25. That poll will also be open for a few weeks. Then we'll do a top 25 countdown.

Hope that's not too complicated! If you know of a better method, leave comments below.

Don't worry, a female counterpart poll will follow in the next few weeks/months.

So here we go! Have fun voting!

Pic: Meet the new Connor clan on Coronation Street

Here's the first official publicity picture showing the two new additions to the Connor clan.

Jonny Connor and Kate Connor will arrive on screen in the soap next week.

Jonny is Aidan Connor's dad and Kate Connor is Aidan's sister.

What else do we know about them so far?  Well, Jonny is played by actor Richard Hawley and Kate is played by Faye Brooks.

Kate is engaged to her girlfriend who is a soldier, and she'll be joining the show soon. You can find out more about her here.

Johnny will be a "man about town", a self made man in his own right. He's described as: "Funny, charming, ruthless in business, Johnny is the sort of guy you'd be proud to call a friend".

I like the sound of Jonny a lot, as I feel Corrie needs another man of an older age to join in with Ken, Roy and Norris.

All we need now is our battle-axe back.

Coronation Street Double Episode Review 28 September 2015

Much praise must go to Paula Lane, as Kylie, Tina O’Brien as Sarah, and Jack Shepherd as David in recent episodes.  Coronation Street has 3 brilliant young actors and long may they continue to entertain and impress us.

Callum’s mum, Marion, interests me. Of course she would come looking for her son. As she says, ‘A mother never stops loving a child.’  She seems pleasant and decent and clearly extremely anxious as to what has happened to her son. But it does beg the question - does she know what he is involved in? What does she think he does to earn a living? Does she know Gemma?

David gives Marion the truth on a plate, rather than the smoked wafer thin ham sandwiches. David informs Marion that Callum has committed a catalogue of crimes and that Max witnessed the beating up of Jason by Callum and no longer wishes to see him.

Another mother in distress is Yasmeen. She notes, ‘A callous murderer is free to go about her business with impunity?’ On seeing Tracy in the street she shouts, ‘Mark my words! I want justice for my son and I will not stop until I get it!’

Gemma arrives at the Platt’s and wants to know where Callum is. She is  suspicious of The Platts, though she does also suspect the man further up the drug dealing tree, Denton, might have done something, as he was after £20,000  from Callum, which Callum tried to exhort with menaces from the Platts.

It is as long as a week now since Gemma has had a text from Callum. She tells the Platts that something is not right. Kylie slips out to fetch Max and while she is out she texts Gemma from Callum’s phone. The text says that he has gone underground for a bit as Denton is on his case. Gemma seems satisfied by that and after she gets £20 from David, she leaves, much to Sarah’s relief. Sarah is horrified at Kylie using Callum’s phone and demands that they get rid of the phone today.

Sarah is in a dreadful state and it is clear to anyone that she is troubled. There is a conversation in The Rovers and ghosts are mentioned, about which Sarah completely over- reacts. Kylie goes to the pub to have a word with her. Kylie tells her that she cannot bear the thought of Max and Kyle growing up with out her and David. ‘You have to be strong, ‘ Kylie tells her.

In the garage David and Kylie are in reflective mood. David has told his mum that it will be her ‘own little palace, fit for a queen.’ Kylie mentions the Princess and the pea, though it is unlikely that Gail will detect Callum through her mattress.

Sally’s standards are slipping as she endures heartbreak. In the street in her dressing gown, she arrives at the corner shop to buy alcohol, chocolate and DVDs to help her find the way through it, until Rita makes an appearance. It’s good to see Rita’s involvement in Sally’s life, giving her a much-needed nudge to sort the situation out with Tim. As Rita suggests, wallowing in self-pity never got anyone anywhere. Sophie is shocked at the extent of her mum’s devastation over Tim so will be relieved at Rita’s efforts. Maybe others are the same, but I do admit to getting ridiculously excited when Rita is on screen.

Much as Sally would prefer to wallow, Greta Garbo style, Rita forces her out to The Rovers and says that a Weatherfield window cleaner needs to see Sally with her head held high. Well, Tim was in the pub but told Sally to go away and told Sophie that she had betrayed him for not telling him about the kiss. Back home, talk centres on the need to cancel the wedding venue. This seems to give Sally the steel that has evaded her. A new determination envelops her and she declares that the wedding WILL take place.

Roy did scrub up well and so did Cathy. As Roy was having his hair trimmed by Audrey, she states that he must take care of his appearance if he is going out with a lady. Then she asks, ‘She is a lady, isn’t she?’  Realising what she has said, and how Roy might interpret the comment, she tries to explain/apologise that she meant nothing offensive.

Roy and Cathy did seem ill at ease in the Bistro, so went back to the café for coffee. They decide that they are not restaurant people.

Cherylee Houston protests at cuts to disabled funding

Coronation Street's Cherylee Houston is one of my favourite actors on the show, playing one of my favourite characters. As far as this fan is concerned, we don't see enough Izzy and I'd love her to get back with Gary.  He and Alya have zero chemistry. Zero.

Anyway, I digress because the point of this blog post is to highlight the fact that Cherylee spoke out at this year's Labour party conference on the subject of Government funding cuts for disabled people.

Roy courting Cathy - Yay or Nay?

I'm loving Roy and Cathy together but I know that at least one of our bloggers doesn't feel the same way.  What I love more than anything about these two characters together is they're two awkward people, finding love. It's been done slowly, appropriately, with just the right amount of respect paid to Hayley and Roy's love for her too.

Melanie Hill and David Neilson are superb as Cathy and Roy. It's an absolute joy to watch the two of them on-screen, you get the feeling you're watching two actors who have honed their craft, playing the parts of two characters we all love.  Well, when I say 'all' of us love them... I know I do.  Do you?

Pics: Sally Webster's Corrie weddings

Pictures released by ITV yesterday showed Sally in her wedding dress waiting at the altar for Tim. Will he turn up? Who knows, but I rather hope he does. I like these two together.

Sally's been married twice before, to the same fella, Kevin Webster.

With her upcoming nuptials to Tim on the horizon, let's have a look back at her wedding frocks from the last two times she was wed.

Here's Sally Seddon marrying Kevin Webster for the first time back in 1986

And here's Sally marrying Kevin for the second time on 9 December 2003.  (9 December is a nice touch, being Coronation Street's birthday).

During wedding preparations in 2003, Sally developed a crush on Alex the builder, who was redecorating number 13. She nearly left Kevin for Alex. Kevin found out just before the wedding and assured Sal that he would still marry her. Sally did the right thing for her family and said goodbye to Alex and remarried Kevin.

Join Corrie anniversary walk on soap's 55th birthday

New Manchester Walks are offering a guided walk on December 9th, which is the date of the 55th birthday of Coronation Street.

It's the last chance to walk with New Manchester Walks around Central Manchester to hear the history of the programme and how it connected with the city - before the set gets demolished!

The tour is hosted by Ed Glinert who led the campaign to get the old Granada set re-opened and who is the only official Manchester guide with access to the new live set in Trafford Park (but not on this occasion) and who hosts events with the stars (with Kemptville Travel).

This tour ends at the re-opened set, but does not include entrance.

Top five Coronation Street TV crossovers

Here's another  great guest blog post from Tommy Cowell.
Follow Tommy on twitter and have a look at his website.

Would you like to write a guest blog post? Details here.

Coronation Street, on its own, is an iconic show. There’s no argument there. From the damp cobbles, the corner shop and that lovely pub. We all know the theme tune, and we all recognise the cat. However, there have been times when our favourite soap has teamed itself up with another show. The term, “shared universe” is bandied around a lot these days, mostly with big budget superhero movies. However, Corrie has been doing the “shared universe” thing for ages.

Here are five of the best examples.

Corrie meets Eastenders (2010)
Perhaps the most famous crossover of the lot – “East Street” was part of the 2010 Children in Need line up. We had Sean flirting with Christian, Gail and Denise comparing husbands, Eileen and Zainab talking about their gay sons and the earth-shattering realisation that Liz is in fact Kat’s mother! (Funnily enough, a fact that was never brought up again!).

Broadcast the month before Corrie's 50th Birthday, viewers began to worry for Eileen, who said a line that fuelled much speculation over her potential fate. Luckily, when she said, “those trams will be the death of me”, it wasn’t was premonition, just a cheeky red herring.

Corrie meets Dallas (and Smith & Jones)
The Russell T. Davies penned direct to video special “Viva Las Vegas” opened with two heavily referential moments. We had Jack and Vera debating over the meaning of the word ‘vet’ in a Smith and Jones style discussion, followed by a glamorous opening title sequence that was inspired by Dallas. A very guilty pleasure!

I also enjoyed the fact that Liz Dawn and Bill Tarmey were called by their full names, Elizabeth Dawn and William Tarmey. It really added to the classiness.

Corrie meets Doctor Who (and the minions) (2015)
One afternoon, earlier this year, Twitter was teased by a photo of the TARDIS on Coronation Street. “What could this mean?!” both fandoms probably thought. In my head, I’d imagined a story of the TARDIS getting taken away by the council, or the Twelfth Doctor getting annoyed by Ken Barlow because he’s smarter than him. Sadly, it was revealed to be a still for a Greg James skit. Don’t get me wrong, it was a charming video, but an actual crossover would have been far more exciting. It also featured the Minions – characters who are even more annoying than the Corrie Meerkats. (Sorry, readers.)

Corrie meets Red Dwarf (2009)
Lister, Rimmer and Kryten landed on the famous cobbles for a special Red Dwarf episode in 2009. They were on the search for actor Craig Charles. Simon Gregson and Michelle Keegan also made cameos. In these scenes, the Corrie actors are playing themselves, but the comedy show implies that the Rovers set is inside the Rovers exterior. WHICH. JUST. ISN’T. TRUE. It just made the story of fictional TV aliens coming to earth, searching for the actors who played them, less realistic.

Corrie meets Jeremy Kyle
Tina vs David vs Nick on Jeremy Kyle, guest-starring Graeme as an audience member. It was all part of JK’s 1000th show, and the actors were in character throughout. Considering the two shows were both filmed at Granada Studios at the time (they’ve both since moved to Media City) it’s not a surprise the two shows had such good relationships. Jeremy and Graham even filmed a goodbye tribute video for Michelle Keegan’s leaving party when she left the show in 2014.   Perhaps the Platts could have done with a reappearance on the show alongside Callum more recently? Rather than, you know, the whole murder thing. I don’t think Jezza would approve.
