Anne Kirkbride to be honoured at British Soap Awards 2015

Anne Kirkbride, who passed away earlier this year, will be honoured at this year's British Soap Awards.

Anne, who played Deirdre Barlow in Coronation Street for 42 years, will be remembered posthumously at the awards ceremony which is being held on Saturday 16 May.

Her on-screen husband William Roache (Ken Barlow) and close friend Bev Callard (Liz McDonald) will present the Outstanding Achievement award on the night, which will be collected by Anne's real-life husband David Beckett.

It will be the first time that the British Soap Awards has handed out the Outstanding Achievement gong after the recipient has died. Anne Kirkbride could also win Scene of the Year for Deirdre throwing her trifle at the wall.

  1. While I do welcome this award, it is a shame that they didn't acknowledge Anne when she was alive. There was an opportunity to do so in 2012 or 2013 when she celebrated 40 years, especially when Helen Worth was awarded last year.

I know Pam St.Clement's exit in 2012 led to her having it, but 2013 could've been Anne's year yet Adam Woodyat got it whereas he could've received it this year on his 30th anniversary.

Having said that, who knows, maybe she rejected the award because she didn't want the publicity, very much like Eileen Derbyshire, who I think should at least be acknowledged and maybe she could send a letter of thanks.

Richard Thorp who played Turner in Emmerdale for 31 years was ignored while Adam Woodyatt (in his 40s) was given one after 28 years just because EastEnders failed to get an award!

Anne was the only one (bar Derbyshire) of the Corrie legends not to get one, and it's such a shame that she's not around to accept it.

Who will get it next year? Sue Nicholls? Sally Dynevor or Chris Chittell (Emmerdale's Pollard) for 30 years.

  2. William Roache should get it.
