Deirdre Barlow voted best soap character of all time

Coronation Street’s Deidre Barlow has been voted the best soap star of all-time in a poll on online bingo site Twobigladies.co.uk.

Anne, who played Deirdre Barlow, was also named best soap actress in the poll.

And she picked up a third award when Deirdre’s affair with Mike Baldwin was picked as viewers’ favourite ever soap plotline.

Coronation Street picked up four of the awards in the survey of 2,000 soap fans by online bingo review site Twobigladies.co.uk.

Britain’s most popular soap actor was voted as Bill Tarmey (JackDuckworth) with William Roahce (Ken Barlow) in second place.

  1. While Deirdre was indeed one of the legends, I think she got the sympathy vote here. It stuns me that the top character wasn't Hilda Ogden!

  2. Totally agree with you Tvor.

  3. It makes a change from EastEnders topping the poll.

But I do agree about Hilda. In this blog countdown, I don't think Deirdre was in the top 20 even.

Very nice, but not the top soap character for me.

  4. Agree with the others - a great character, sadly missed, but not up there like Hilda, Ena and Annie.

  5. My all time favourite is Mother Blanche

  6. She was a great character, but, as others have pointed out, not in the same league as Hilda Ogden. Mind you, neither of them ever held a candle to the shining, godlike Kirk Sutherland. Our Kirkeh is The Man.

  7. I suppose the Majority of the voters never watched Hilda back in the day. For modern viewers, it does make sense. Deirdre was indeed a top character.

  8. Well deserved in my opinion. I always thought Deirdre was somewhat underrated, maybe because her character didn't fall into a classic archetype - she wasn't a battleaxe (Ena), a snob (Annie), nor a gossip with a heart-of-gold (Hilda) - she somehow transcended classification
and also bridged several generations. I'm sorry the actress did not live to enjoy this extra recognition.

  9. I agree with Tvor's assement about the sympathy vote and also thought Hilda Odgen should've been voted top Corrie character.
Despite being framed for fraud by John Lindsay,Deirdre supported Tracy when she lied about Gail 'murdering' Joe McinTyre when they were cellmates and Tracy's lie about Becky pushing her down the stairs and miscarraging Steve's twins. Those storyline to me ruined Deirdre and almost made her become a villain.
