The links may be tenuous, but they're there. Yes folks, there are indeed links between Coronation Street and the Eurovision song contest.
SimonRayner1 on twitter tells us this about Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor.
"Former member of Hear'Say, Kym Marsh, enjoyed a successful, if rather too brief, solo singing career after leaving the group, then in 2006 she competed in the 'Making Your Mind Up' show for the right to represent her country at Eurovision." Watch it here:
Les Dennis, Coronation Street's Michael Rodwell, starred in the spoof Eurovision stage play, called Eurobeat. I went to see this and it was fantastic.

Well there is a better connection with Euro and the 'other soap', ie Samantha Janus.
ReplyDeleteKim represented Athens? How does it work? Can they have a singer of any nationalatity represent them? I don't really see the point. Or is it only the song that has to be written by the country concerned?
ReplyDeleteHere in Canada, Eurovision has been pretty much ignored by our media until this year, where they are concentrating on nothing but the rivalry between Russia & The Ukraine. Sad state of affairs. :-(
Kym Marsh lost in 2006 to Daz Simpson singing Teenage Life generally thought to be one of worst UK entries ever! A fitting climax to her musical career and so better than her acting.
ReplyDeleteTo make stronger links for next year cast Cochita Wurst as Michelle Connors daughter. (Left in hospital by mistake).
ReplyDeleteOr recast Cochita Wurst as Ryan-with-a-new-head.
ReplyDeleteOr recast Marcia/Marc as Conchita.
ReplyDeleteOne year the girl who played Candice was on the UK jury, and maybe hosted the UK Junior Eurovision final?
ReplyDeletebbhilda - She said represent the country at Athens - meaning to represent the UK (her country) at the Athens competition, not to represent Athens.
ReplyDeleteEither way, after saying she loved how her favorite contestant "owned" the stage, Kym most certainly did not.
