There's a Coronation Street spoiler in today's Mirror that says Coronation Street has cast actress Sair Khan to play Alya, the daughter of personal trainer Khalid “Kal” Nazir.
It was announced some time ago that we'd see more members of Kal's muslim family. However, much as I like Jimi Mistry as an actor, I don't feel he's coming over that great in Coronation Street as Kal. Mind you, he's not been given much to do yet so maybe bringing in his daughter will stir things up a bit and give him more of a storyline.
Mr Curry Sauce tells The Mirror: “Alya is a good-looking girl who has just graduated from university and is back living with her family. She mixes brains and beauty so you can imagine there are going to be a few of the men of Weatherfield who will be interested in her. Alya is both intelligent and intriguing when she comes in.”
Alya's first scenes will be aired in June.

I agree about Kal, he is just annoying 'popping up' everywhere when it just doesnt merit it. By all means bring in a Muslim family to represent our now multi racial society but lets have it written so we learn more about Islam etc and the pressures on young Muslims today. As usual the lazy writers have Kal to join the sexual bed hopping merry go round and very unbelevably be besotted with round the block 100 times Leanne who would be considered totally unsuitable. As for bringing his daughter in - I thought his kids were small - fine as long as she isnt going to be the usual mouthy teen and we get rid of some characters to make way for all these new ones before the set collapses in the sea. What is the point of Julie any more?
ReplyDeleteWhen a new character comes in they rarely take centre stage straight away. That would be silly. Give him a chance!
ReplyDeleteKal seems to be fast becoming the new Stella with so much screen time.
ReplyDeleteI too thought his children were about 10 years old. So who exactly are the guys going to be who are interested in her - there's only one of the right age and we've already been told he's going to date Katie. Oh noooo not even more new young characters coming in!
Yes I thought both of his children were younger, too, though it doesn't really matter if one of them is a bit older. It's nice that they've cast an unknown, too, and I recall that Michelle Keegan was unknown as well and did very well.
ReplyDeleteBeauty AND brains eh! She'll get a job in the kebab shop then!
ReplyDeleteI like Kal, he's not been given a proper place in the soap yet, once the gym opens, I imagine he will come into his own.
ReplyDeleteI just hope she is not going to be "feisty" which is soap speak for an annoying pain in the backside. Lets hope they do something with her instead of just having her answer back her dad and end up working at the factory as yet another 'talented seamstress!!!'
ReplyDeleteShe'll be the EE equivalent of Shobna..mouthy and constantly bossing her dad around - watch for fire-works between her and Leanne. No one will be good enough for her dad. Should be good stuff ahead - hopefully
ReplyDeleteThe actress is 26 years old. She has theatre experience but only been on tv once.
ReplyDeleteWhy why why?
They only have to glam up Katy! She is gorgeous. Definitely the ideal replacement for glam puss Tina.
I thought too that Kal's kids were around Dev's kids ages. How old is this girl supposed to be? And also how do they intend to follow through on the muslim beliefs and make her glamorous...esp if Shobna is anything to go by.
So disappointing that this girl is only being hired for her looks...and really...what an insult to Michelle Keigen. Yes girl! You are that replaceable.....very sad indeed. No comment on her acting....just replace her looks.
If Alya is a university graduate, then she's about 23. Which would normally make Kal somewhere around 45 but he looks much younger and was supposed to be an Army buddy of Gary's. His dad looks about 55. This doesn't add up.
ReplyDeleteExactly abbyk. How old is Kal supposed to be? This makes no sense. Is this April Fools jokes? Typos that should say Kal's sister??
ReplyDeleteStuart Blackburn said in an interview: ”We’ve established that Kal, his son and his daughter live with Kal’s mum and dad." Maybe I've missed something but I don't recall Kal talking about his home life or anything much about his kids. I hope they don't make the same mistake as they did with Mandy, Lloyd and Jenna. The characters have to look right so make the 'daughter' an age-appropriate relative.
ReplyDeleteSo Kal's daughter is a University graduate and now living back at home? I already do not like the sound of that. Writers....PLEASE do something useful with her life. Don't make her the next Jenna on the street, education thrown away for a stupid relationship and a dead end job.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, she is way too old to be Kal's daughter. Like everyone, I thought his "kids" would be kids. Personally, I don't think they needed another twenty-something on this show.
I thought I heard his kids were teenagers. If the actress is in her twenties she could be playing a character a few years younger and about to finish high school.
ReplyDeleteAt any rate, she's a pretty girl. I hope the writers take the opportunity to explore issues like furthering her education and not working at the factory and going through life without her mom being there for life's big moments. I'm not sure how much their Muslim faith will factor in with this family since we have already seen that Kal drinks alcohol so may not be observant.
We can access the bios of the actors, and we've been allowed to check out the new set, what I would like to see one day is the bios of the current writers. Maybe male/female ratio, approximate age brackets, past experience, and what they say about the show and what direction they'd like to see it go.
ReplyDeleteThat would be interesting, as other posters have touched on that too.
I also supposed Kal had younger children.
We all know what that means when she's described as "a good-looking girl who has just graduated from university" and is back living with her family".
I don't think Kal has ever drunk alcohol, Rebecca. He always orders fruit juice. I'd assumed this was part of his fitness regimen until we discovered he was Muslim.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell? On a Street where we already have more than too many characters, we're going to add another one? They just revealed Steph's brother! Good grief.
