It’s Hayley’s funeral. She’s requested the mourners wear a splash of colour and they do her proud. Sean’s in a red suit, as is Carla. There are pink umbrellas, red ties and Tim’s in his green and white Weatherfield County football top. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen one of those on Corrie. Mary turns up in her flamenco dress and Norris wears a natty bow-tie that he wore when he danced with Hayley.
The mourners are dressed and ready, waiting for Roy to come down from the flat and join them as they set off to church. But Roy doesn’t think he can go through with it, especially knowing what he does about Hayley taking her own life. Carla and Fiz gently persuade him and he sets off to the crematorium for the humanist service.
The mourners are handed daffodils on their way in, a symbol to place on Hayley’s flowered coffin as they say their goodbyes. Carla stands and gives a reading, followed by Fiz. But when Fiz gets to the point in her speech about how selfless Hayley was, how she put others before herself, it’s too much for Roy to bear. He interrupts Fiz. ‘People deserve to know the truth,’ he says, standing up to address the gathered crowd. ‘I’m sorry, but they do. The truth … the truth is, she was not perfect. She was flawed. She was real. She was my light, my beautiful coruscating light. My life was a dark corner and she came into it. I could see. I could see the world with her. I understood life. I understood love. She was my constant, my comfort, my compass. Hayley was my truth, without her, I … ‘ And then he faltered and could speak no more.
The wake’s held at the Rovers where Michelle and Steve get handy with a cheese hedgehog and a mountain of Scotch eggs. There are daffodils decorating the pub, a toast is raised to Hayley and the locals all join in a sing-song to The Carpenters’ Close to You in her honour. But Roy takes himself to a corner of the pub before leaving quietly, unnoticed, to wander the Weatherfield streets on his own, shopping bag in his hand.
Meanwhile in the back yard of the Rovers, Mary dances the cha-cha on her own. She promised Hayley that she would but hoped Norris would have danced with her. It’s heartbreaking watching Mary dance alone but even more so when Norris comes out, tells her she’s doing it wrong, takes her in hold and the two of them cha-cha-cha together, in Hayley’s memory. A lovely touch.
Elsewhere this week, all else pails again into insignificance. There’s a storyline of sorts developing, although by ‘eck it’s taking its time, between Maddie the homeless girl and Sophie. The story so far consists of Sophie running into the homeless centre, spitting a few words at Maddie who spits a few back. This week Maddie kissed Sophie but I’m losing the will to care.
In better news, the Tinker threesome of Beth, Craig and Darryl the rat move in with Chesney and Sinead, as does Kirk. It’s a happy family for now although with Beth not working, money is tight. She tries her hand at cooking dinner for them all but they complain about the lumps. “That’ll be the Branston pickle!” she declares. Anyway, she soon gets her job back at Underworld and all is well once again.
Nick’s having a hard time living back with his mum and can’t stand her fussing over him all of the time. “Get a cat!” he tells her. “I’m allergic to cats,” she huffs back. “And I’m allergic to you!” he replies before moving back into the flat. Leanne moves out of the flat and in with her mum.
And finally this week, Tracy starts being attentive to Amy when she’s jealous that Amy is spending time with Michelle. Worse still for Tracy Amy seems to enjoy being with Michelle too, and Tracy can’t have that. So she spends the night in with Amy watching films on telly. Rob joins in too. It’s a bit creepy, Tracy Barlow playing happy families. No good will come out of it, just you wait and see.
And that’s just about that for this week.
This week's writers were Julie Jones, Jayne Hollinson, Mark Burt, Ellen Taylor. Find out more about the Coronation Street writing team at http://coronationstreetupdates.blogspot.com/2008/11/exclusive-all-current-corrie-writers.html

Roy is in the catering trade along with Anna and Fizz and Carla have been sticking their beaks in, although well intentioned, throughout, so how come Michelle and Steve ‘forgot’ to get food in for the wake that everyone on the Street had on their minds. Ridiculous and just an excuse for ever more tiresome bickering from these two, Michelle is really dragging the character of Steve down – lets all hope he dumps her for the perma cheerful Andrea!
ReplyDeleteIf the writers wanted to make Tracy a more rounded character, they would strengthen her relationship with Amy. That would be her redeeming feature but I guess it's just a set-up for when she falls out with Rob and turns 'evil' with Tina. Maybe some viewers love Tracy being this one-dimensional face-puller, but I much prefer to see several layers to the character. KF is doing a reasonable job with the storyline although I won't care that much when the truth comes out about Rob.
ReplyDeleteAre the writers really trying for the sympathy vote when it comes to Tracy? Not going to wash. Sorry. I for one hope she gets it both barrels. She can't be redeemed. She killed a man in cold blood and has gotten away with it.
ReplyDeleteMichelle admitted to Steve that she was the one who forgot to place the catering order but, once again, the brain-damaged Nick comes to the rescue. Where was Liz? She could have watched the pub while Steve and Michelle went to Haleys funeral.

Where was Liz?
Good question if she wasn't in the pub and I don't recall seeing her at the funeral was she getting it off somewhere with Tony (?) Jason's dad
Okay - I am going to go against the grain...I have to be true to myself...lol
ReplyDeleteI love Tracy...warts and all.
I loved the scene where Rob referred to Tracy and Amy as 'his girls' and offered to let Deirdre in as well.
I am a rare person who did not like Karen McDonald. Her treatment of baby Amy turned my stomach. When she was screaming and scowling it was only Tracy who had the nerve to stand up to her.
I know a lot of people do not like Kate/Tracy...but I am telling you, I could do a write-up on why I love the character and the actress.
With that said....I did not like Carla...especially when she was always going for someone else's man when she usually had a man already...but I love what the writers have done. If I can say now that I love the character of Carla...surely some can give Tracy another chance. Afterall they are products of the writing team......they determine how they behave, not the actors.
I'm sorry to be a nit picker, but shouldn't that be "all else pales", not "all else pails"?
ReplyDeleteHels bails, dous it realy mater ? ,!!!
ReplyDeleteI kind of expected that type of response from someone.
ReplyDeleteI felt that the character of Mary was summer up nicely in this episode. At heart she's perceptive, kind, sensitive and caring, but somehow she gets it wrong through a social awkwardness. She's very bright too - maybe she's on the autistic spectrum? She's gone through a lifetime of rejection and being laughed at and yet always bounces back with an optimism and cheerfulness that are inherent to her character. I like her, despite her flaws.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I like Mary too. Though I do not think she has autism, just an awkwardness of beating to her own drum. I think she learned like a lot of us in high school...not everyone is going to be part of the popular crowd,, so your best bet is to be yourself and enjoy life - on your own terms.
ReplyDeleteI know she is fictional...but I like that Corrie characters are flawed. They do not act perfectly any more than the rest of us do. :-)
