Coronation Street double episode review, Monday 11 March

Oh dear - tensions in the households of Chesney, Fiz and Katy and also in the Sally, Sophie and guest Gail household.

It's perfectly understandable that Katy is tired and fed up and the writers are pretty transparent in taking up the issue, firmly advising against teenage pregnancy. To demonstrate the difficulty of running a home, looking after a baby and trying to earn a living, we see Katy snipe at Chesney as she asks him if he has had a good lie-in. When Ryan arrives to ask Katy if she'll do his shift for him so he can take Steph out, she refuses at first and then says, 'Yeah, right, whatever, I'll do it,' which is perhaps not the most gracious way to grant a favour but we understand, even if Fiz and Chesney don't. In the kebab shop, Steph is informed by Katy that Tracy, who viewers will remember had a scene with Ryan, is Ryan's mum's boyfriend's friend's ex-wife - and did some time for murder.

Later Katy confesses to Ryan that she was jealous of Steph, which is the reason she badmouthed him. So out they go on a night out after Ryan runs the lyrics of The Specials by Katy: 'Much too much, much too young, you're married with a kid when you should be having fun.' OK Ryan.

Sally's household tensions concern Gail, naturally. Sophie is timing Gail's stays in the bathroom and becoming very frustrated. Rather wittily, Sally asks Sophie why she doesn't stay in bed like normal teenagers. Pretending that they need some private time, mother and daughter claim they are going to the bistro, but are found out, though not before Sally asks Jenna when she first knew she was a lesbian and as a result is teased that if she liked and indeed noticed Chris Evert-Lloyd's legs then maybe too Sally is gay.

Happily, later, Gail does inform Sally that she's viewing some flats next week, and admits that she knows she's in the way. Let's hope the friendship lasts until Gail gets the keys for her new flat. We all need to think twice about how quickly a friendship can be ruined, no matter if it is of long standing.

Did anyone else notice, in the first episode that Peter Barlow was hanging around, observing and commenting on people and events? He mentions how Dev and Sunita are holding it together, behaving in a civil fashion in front of the children. He delivers a good line - for us, not so good for him. He asks how it is that when Leanne says hello, what he actually hears is, 'I hate you, you adulterer.' Sunita feels the magnitude of her mistake saying she left Dev for a complete loser. Then Joni Mitchell arrived with her Big Yellow Taxi song, or rather Sunita said that 'you don't know what you've got till it's gone.'  So true...

Gloria! Please! Those lego and thumb-sucking jokes about Jason deserve more than a gentle reproach. Stella is extremely tolerant. How long is Gloria sticking around and what story lines are in store for her? It's not really working.

Poor Chesney. How will things work out? The ring he gazes on as the last shot, just before switching everything off, is what he hopes Katy will be delighted with. We'll know, soon enough.
