Karl is set to take a villainous turn in the coming weeks, as he begins terrorising Jason and Stella, in his twisted campaign to win back Stella's heart.
ITV.com has a great interview with actor John Michie, who plays the increasingly creepy Karl Munro.
In upcoming scenes, Karl will kidnap Stella, and burn Jason's van, but it seems that there is a method behind the madness.
"Jason’s a
builder so without a van he won’t be able to do a great deal. He wants
Jason to fail as the boyfriend so it’s vindictive and nasty, there’s a
definite plan," Michie tells ITV.
This seems to be an interesting direction to take Karl's character in, since he broke up with Sunita, there seems to have been no real direction for his character to take. The real question is, does this mean that Karl will be the Rovers Return arsonist, or is this just a red herring?
"Initially he has a plan and a calculation" Michie explains, "but it all goes horribly wrong, and then he has to catch up with the
events. It’s the events themselves that turn him bad; deep down he
himself isn’t a bad person he’s just obsessed and in love. The best
thing for Karl would be to leave Stella alone and not be with her."

This could be a good thing because John Michie is such a fine actor and could carry off yet more sensationalism but also a bad thing because as a kidnapper and arsonist he will have to be caught and written out which is a real pity. Another great character with potential ruined by the writers.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right Frosty...Karl had the makings of a Jack Duckworth type of character, but the writers have quickly marched him down a dead end street...there doesn't seem to be any prospect of redemption judging by these latest storylines:( Shame...
ReplyDeleteDon't assume he will be written out. The writers could do a John Stape and keep him in the show with ever more bizzare and unrealistic storylines. I wouldn't put anything past these hacks.
ReplyDeleteI'd always hoped Karl would become a Jack Duckworth character. I think he looks a bit like a young Jack. This story could be a good direction but it's a bit late in the day to be giving him decent material. I can only think this must be leading up to an exit. I'm still convinced Stella will go at the end of MC's contract. Can't see they would keep him on if MC has decided to leave.
ReplyDeleteI think we are being set up for a "who started the Rovers fire" story. Sunita is going to be blamed even though she dies in it but I think Karl will also be blamed. Another wrongly accused Corrie martyr.
ReplyDeleteBut remember: Jack Duckworth remained on the show for 24 years despite him causing the Rovers fire.
ReplyDeleteBut Jack was not responsible for anyone's death. According to the Sun, Karl will kill Sunita as revenge for ruining his life. If Paul the fireman also dies than that is manslaughter or some such thing.
ReplyDeleteOh Janice, if Paul the Fireman dies, that won't be manslaughter, that will be a great day for Weatherfield and me... LOL.
ReplyDeleteI reckon it will have been more of an accidental death, i don't think Karl is murderous, he just wants Stella back. If he was out to kill anyone it would be Jason, his prime rival. I have a feeling he probably did do something that caused the fire, perhaps on purpose or possibly accidental but hadn't thought it would do the damage it does.
ReplyDeleteKarl began so promisingly and now is ruined. Congratualations, Collinson and writers!
ReplyDeleteNOW they decide to do something with Karl? What's the rush? What a whole lot of a waste of a good character so they could give Sunita and Deve a storyline.
