Coronation Street double episode review, Monday March 12

The continuity announcer somewhat sarcastically declared that it was time for "more Cluedo" before the first of Monday's episodes - and he had a point. To mix detective cliches, I'm almost expecting  Inspector Poirot or Columbo to turn up in Weatherfield,  this whole whodunnit storyline is  getting so contrived.

It will be good when all is revealed and normal Coronation Street business returns as normal.I'm not the first to say this, but Corrie producers would be wise to have a period away from all these blood and thunder murder/killing/fatal accident recent storylines.
Anyhow, Carla protested her innocence to the police when questioned on suspicion of murder. But Peter then falsely confessed to the killing, apparently to protect her, after he saw her burn Frank's  contract which Michelle had previously confessed to stealing.

Hurt Lewis decided to quit Coronation Street but a contrite Audrey persuaded him to stay after she, predictably, confessed she still had feelings for him. It's good news having the wonderful Nigel Havers continuing in the Street. Let's just hope they don't devise a storyline around him as the next Corrie serial killer!

Alzheimer's Diseasevictim Lesley rallied and showed patches of her former self after husband Paul jogged her memory with old photo albums. Eileen was secretly miffed and tried to encourage Paul to look into residential care for Lesley as she felt it was best for her. Not like you have an ulterior motive eh, Eileen!

And Dennis arranged a surprise engagement party with all their friends for bride to be Rita.

  1. As contrived and cliched as it may be, I do love a good whodunnit. Although this one is OBVIOUS and has been from the off it survives because I love the characters involved and scrren time for them = good for me. Carla, seeing some of her old fire and spark back again with her confrontations with the Detective in the copshop and Anne in the factory. I will be glad when Carla comes through this 'annus horribilis' stronger than ever, and the strong powerful woman returns to have Barlow Jr on his knees and Leanne spitting splinters from the sidlines the hard faced cow ! All the actors are great in this storyline :) Kat, Queenstown NZ via Manchester x

  2. The continual murder storylines + the preposterous Tyrone storyline is the reason why I have this week decided to stop watching Corrie after 20 years. A sad decision, but I still have my vintage episodes...

  3. Time for an exorcism to be carried out in that factory. At the rate it's going, it'll have seen off more Corrie cast than are left performing!

And LOL at poor Audrey's attempt to get past that Concorde-like conk of Lewis's when attempting to kiss him.

If you replay the bit where Audrey responds by going for the kiss with Lewis, you can tell the actors are unfamiliar with kissing each other. As she closes in for the kiss, she's left out of range failing to get past Lewis's hooter of a nose, which is literally keeping her at arm's lemgth from his lips!

Watch the action stop ever so momentarily as her subconscious automatically re-calculates the trajectory required to get her head under the radar of the conk protecting Lewis's face from all boarders.

There's a definite pause as she 'fights' to get past it.
Re-run the episode and see for yourself. I put the episode on pause as I replayed it again and again, well worth a laugh!

  4. Lovely bit of dialogue between Carla and detective interrogating her, particularly:

"You murdered him because he raped you, didn't you?"

    - "Didn't you know? The court ruled that no rape took place. Why would I murder him for a rape that the law proved never happened?
You can't have it both ways."

    - Touché and touché again!!!

    And the immediate response?
A moment's pause from the 'tec as he realises he'll have to up his game, and try another approach if he's to get anywhere with this one.

  5. Thought Carla was fantastic in the police interview and although this whole story is a bit cliched I think Alison King is far better in this than she was in the rape storyline.

Also I am loving - in a very sad way though - how CarPet is a clear case of mutual self-destruct. The argument over the whisky bottle last week was so pathetic, and I mean that in its proper sense. This relationship just can't survive and I think Peter Gascoine and Alison King's acting are fantastic and sensitive.

  6. I hate the Eileen Paul Lesley story and why was that shot done with her sitting with Eileen's big fat legs up on the table? Very odd and not flattering.

  7. You voiced my feelings as the credits rolled at 9pm last night. The murder investigation really showed up some very poor writing. I like a good whodunnit, but this is not Agatha Christie. It's absolutely obvious that none of the "suspects" bottled Frank and the police questioning of Kevin was just laughable. The whole thing is tedious.

Up until now, I found CarPet duller than ditchwater, but watching the destruction of their relationship is interesting. I can't recall such an ill suited couple. It is almost worth all the tedium of them getting together.

  8. Loved Dennis' speech to Rita and the OAPs reminiscing.

  9. I was only 2, so I don't remember what I was doing, but what a lovely way to get to Dennis' speech. Normal conversation, normal topic, with dollop of stewing Norris.

Carpet, don't like them as a couple, but I hope we can keep them a bit longer. They are that accident you stop to watch, even though you know its wrong and you have somewhere else to be. They are fantastic together, as are Leanne, Simon, the senior Barlows, even Michelle (was surprised she had the papers, and glad she didn't know what to do with them) playing off them. The tension is high because of trust, not the murder itself -- good stories get down to emotions. Brassy Carla is crumbling, CG has the Midas touch and turns every scene into gold. I can't wait for the custody issue dramatics.

Get poor Lesley some proper care already! Love the portrayal; I wouldn't hate Pileen so much if Lesley weren't so sympathetic. Isn't there some part of NHIS that covers her?

  10. Tawdry, tawdry, tawdry story with Paul and Eileen (Pileen - haha AbbyK)and that thorn in Eileen's side, Lesley. Not liking Eileen at the moment, hope Paul moves far away with Lesley, Eileen snaps out of it and gets back to Streetcars.

  11. The only person I feel sorry for in the Alzheimer's story is Lesley (the actress who plays her is superb). Surely the intention was for us to see both sides of the situation with Paul and Eileen but they've lost a lot of sympathy. Eileen should not have laughed at the fact Lesley wished Norris 'Happy Christmas' - only a loved one can do that.

  12. What a fab actress Ali King is. I love it when Carla is feisty.

The Eileen storyline is a bit 'ick' as well. I feel like Paul should know better but obviously it's all about their unmet needs.
