Phil Collinson to stay at Corrie for at least another year

There's a good interview with Coronation Street Producer Phil Collinson in the Manchester Evening News.  He talks about his job at the helm of our favourite show and reveals how long he's signed up for at Corrie.

He says: “The show is moving to Salford Quays next year. That’s a very big move for us. I’ll see that through as producer. So that takes me into the middle of next year. I can’t see beyond that at the moment. I’m happy to be creatively leading the show and still think I’ve got more stories to tell.”

He responds to criticism that the show, rightly, received last summer and says: “We took a good hard look at what we were doing. Perhaps we were too crime heavy. But, ultimately, you’ve got to trust your instincts and the instincts of the people around you.”

He also talks about Betty Williams' send off on Corrie and speaking at a public event next week about Corrie's use of the Carla Connor rape storyline.  Find out more about that here.

You can read the full interview here.

What do you reckon? Is it time for Phil Collinson to go and let a new producer take control?

  2. Absolutely time for him to go. Agree with above Anonymous, take "St Ella" with him. Let's hope time flies to the middle of next year...

  3. The programme is the best it's been in ages. I genuinely don't understand the criticism of Phil.

  4. I don't know what show he's been watching it sure can't have been Coronation Street, his story lines are so far fetched it beggars belief.
The sooner he goes the better, I think the show is surviving more through inertia than anything he thinks he has done for the show's story lines.

  5. time to go I think! and I agree , take Stella and Eva as well !

The best thing he has done, is bring Dennis back, introduced Sylvia, and made Brian and Julie a real corrie couple ( like a modern day Mavis and Derek !!) which I think has worked well

  6. I like some of what he's done, but there has been too much sensationalism since he took over. At the moment it seems like its been one thing after another and I'd like thinkgs to quieten down for a while.

  8. I'd really like more banter with Gail and Audrey...they are hilarious together. Less violence..too EE for me. I am not impressed with the storyline of Eileen and Paul-horrible and they should get shed of that right soon. All in all I think it's been an alright year - more Ken and Deidre too...they both grew a pair and it's great! Finally saying no to those loser kids of theirs (Tracy and Peter).

  9. In the interview, he even admits he made it a little to sensationalist following the tram crash, so I don't see why people have problems with him, most characters in the show are used evenly now, instead of one plot dominating all

  10. Yes, I agree with Chewy. I don't see the critcism. He is sharing the character and I'm really glad to be able to see more of other characters. More of that please!

When are they going to rid us of this troublesome producer? I see that negotiations are opened with Kym Marsh as they "dont want to lose her". Another pointless and annoying character kept on and on........... Have they any idea what they are doing? Shakes head in dispair.

  13. I still hate the blurry opening titles, the marc/marcia storyline was corrie at its lowest, dennis is a wasted opportunity, and the months following the tram crash there was way too much happening story-wise. He's taken that on board and slowed things down again. in the old days tyrone & anna wouldve been written out by now when their spouses left but I love how phil has brought singles/couples into larger family groups. for example tommy/tina/tyrone, the armstrong/windass family, the platts/eva/kylie and Rita/Dennis/Norris/Mary/ Emily. I do think the move to Salford Quays is going to be very obvious but we shall pretend we haven't noticed like when the Rovers changed its wallpaper and then it changed again overnight.

  14. BarrieT, Phil is now using the "family unit" as something that is almost extinct. How many "couples" are there on Corrie, I can only think of Ken and Drear and Roy and Haley. St Ella and Karl of ocurse then then he is due to fall for the charms of Sunny D. Too many singles for it to be realistic.

  15. I have now lapsed into a state of depression learning Phil Collinson is here until next year - I really had hoped he would be gone this year. If he is staying that will mean Sterile Stella will be protected and more incredulous story lines :(

  16. I've enjoyed Phil's stay at Corrie. Every producer has had their low points. I don't see the problem with tackling serious issues. I find they're always sprinkled with lighter storylines throughout.

It must be difficult to write for TV these days. We don't live in the 1950s any more, when rape, adultery and soldiers suffering mental distress were not issues openly discussed, much less addressed. I actually find watching Corrie less stressful than the news, or a documentary about the same issues. I had a friend who called the show her "stories".

  17. Phil Collinson,is a Fantastic producer,he has had some of the best ratings the programme has produced in years.Yes some things are sensationalised and over the top,but it has made fantastic tele.He is passionate beyond belief about corrie, researches story lines thoroughly and his competiveness is second to none.It will only be that he is so ambitious that takes him from corrie.I joined an extras agency in Manchester just so i coiuld be a walk on in Corrie. The atmosphere is electric, the cast. crew, are so professional courtious, and there is a buzz there you feel all day.you have,nt seen the best of phil collinson yet
