Maybe I'm just forgetful, but I was really confused in last week’s episodes of Coronation Street as to why Sunita didn't get along with her stepdaughter Amber. Hopefully I wasn't the only one. Corrie usually does a really good job of explaining past stories, but as they haven't yet; I thought I'd post this recap to explain.
According to the wonderful episode summaries on Corrie.net, Amber moved in with Dev and Sunita way back in 2005. Amber's mum was one of Dev's shop assistants and was taken ill so Sunita let Amber stay with them for a while. Dev wasn't happy about this and we soon discovered why. Amber was in fact, one of Dev's secret children, although she had no idea she was. Sunita obviously had no either her husband had another family either.
Soon afterwards, Sunita left to live with her parents. So it's likely that Sunita blames Amber for her and Dev's break up, even though it wasn't Amber's fault at all, it was all Dev's. This explains the resentment between the two I think.
Let me know if I've got this wrong or missed something, in the comments box below.
I thought it was impossible to be outacted by Shobna Ghullati but this Amber character manages it well, she makes Dev look like Tom Hanks, and that's a big ask.
ReplyDeleteA performance of no belief nor confidence me thinks.
You've got it spot on. I think Sunita sees Amber as the catalyst for the breakup of her marriage. She had no idea about Dev's other families and had no choice but to leave him.
ReplyDeleteAnd some salt for the wound: when Dev was dating that toothy marketing girl (can't remember her name, but she was a business acquaintance's daughter), Amber was in heaven. That girl was just a year or two older than her, so she was more like a big sister with money and a career. Even offscreen, Sunita would have heard about it and not been pleased.
ReplyDeleteI have no recollection of Sunita being snitty with Amber. In fact didnt they get on well? More of Phil Collinson's nastyness brought into the Street.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she blames Amber but yes, probably sees her as the catalyst. However, she's back together with Dev, why hold it against the kid? And i remember Amber being thrilled with the twins when they were born. There just wasn't the contention there between them when Sunita left. It's also being unreasonable to have Amber staying there when she insisted on her TWO Aunties when Dev objected.
ReplyDeleteNo, I remember Sunita being outraged at the discovery of all Dev's other (never-again-mentioned) children and grandchildren, but she didn't take it out on Amber. In fact she was supportive, as Amber's mother was off to Finland. Then when the twins arrived, Amber was supportive of Sunita. It just doesn't make sense. Lazy writing again. I'd much rather have seen Amber return to become an ally to Sunita, with the pair combining to prick Dev's pomposity.
ReplyDeleteWhat is certain is that Sunita was never the mardy cow she was behaving like last week.
Whatever reason, it just means more scenes with this dire family. How embarrasing was Jimmi Harkishan's "acting" last night again and the adenoidal Amber isnt much better. Why bring another pointless character that had come to a natural end back again? No idea at all.
ReplyDeleteboring and awful acting-i dont know why they brought any of them back and they should have got rid of dev years ago
ReplyDeleteall these axings and yet they renew the most dull characters contracts
i remember when Amber came on and it was way before Sunita and Amber was dumped on Dev, her moher didn't want her any more. Then Sunita comes along and they get along very well. The trouble seems to happen after the twins and Sunita left Dev. The Corrie writers never go back and review what they previously write and are never the same writers so they can't remember the story lines.
