Rovers Return to suffer plague of rats

There's a bizarre Coronation Street spoiler in today's Daily Star. The paper reckons that Corrie's Rovers Return is facing a plague of monster rats that will terrorise locals in the pub, Roy's Rolls and Nick Tilsley’s bistro.

Bosses at the ITV1 soap came up with the storyline after seeing a news report last year in which real-life residents of a Bradford council estate shot and killed a 3ft rat.

Norris takes it upon himself to get tid of the rodents and tells Rita: “They may have beaten amateurs like Roy Cropper and Nick Tilsley but they’ll find me quite a different adversary altogether. Let’s see them get past the Pied Piper of Weatherfield!”   In hilarious scenes, Norris will be seen carrying out daily inspections of the Street’s gardens and back alleys so he can capture and kill the rats. But they prove more than a match for his traps and poison, and the problem goes from bad to worse in the heat of the Weatherfield summer.  Soon most of the area’s houses are over-run with the beasts.

“This storyline will be a brilliant mix of the scary and the hilarious,” said an insider. Any viewers scared of rats will be hiding behind their sofas. But Norris’s attempt to bring them under control and lead them out of Weatherfield is going to be a comedy classic.”

  1. I'm intrigued by this news. It's a little odd, but it will be nice to have a big comedic storyline, and I imagine that Norris will knock it out of the park.

  2. I hate it when they go on about disgusting things like this as I normally wait until Corrie starts, and sit down with a meal on my lap. They have often made me throw my meals away at times.

  6. After reading this post, come off and stare at the photo shown of Norris, he's so comical looking. I hope he's got a fifty - year contract signed. Not looking forward to this story though.

  10. Handled right this is the sort of classic comic material the show was built upon. Reminds me of when Hilda returned from a cleaning job on a cruise ship to find Stan & Eddie had been living as such slobs in her abscence that No13 had rats.

  11. Maybe one of these might end up in Betty's hotpot? Ha Ha!!!

  12. This sounds excellent - a throwback to the time Hilda and Stan had rats, and when the cafe was plagued with mice (Emily and Gail both agonised over killing it) - but the only thing that puts me off this new storyline is the size of the rat...!

  13. Ha ha Norris! If it wasn't for him, Corrie wouldn't be the same. However, I wish there was a little more of him throughout most episodes.

  16. I like the idea of this. People are complaining about too much crimes and too much unrealistic. This is realistic as possible. I see that no one can be satisfied.

  17. Norris is great and I wish he would have the nerve to moan about the bad photography where the camera is always trailing around people and not standing in one position. You tell 'em Norris!

  18. These rats should get into his shop where no one will go in, so he tries to sell his sweets in the pub until Pam gets there first. David should also play a trick on Norris by attaching cotton to a rubber rat, and making Norris go after it. This could go on for a couple of weeks until Norris finds out. David could even use his cotton and rubber rat in other places such as in the pub making everyone scream and run out.

  19. Sorry, Anonymous, but how old do you think David is now? Yes, by all means, let the writers adopt the rubber rat plot - if you want to see the last nail hammered into the show's coffin. As I said, this could work if HANDLED WELL, and that means making it about character reactions.
