Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 23rd September

SARAH - DANIEL - CORONATION STREET - ITV

Daniel hears the news of Daisy and Ryan's split and rushes around to the pub. Whilst Bethany's away, Daniel will play a shoulder to cry on for his ex, it seems. Whilst Daisy is telling Danny-boy that she still loves him, Bethany, or someone with Bethany's phone, is ringing Daniel, but he kills the calls and also kills Daisy's feelings, saying that he still cares for her, but he's with Platt Jnr (for) now. Later, he finally answers a call from his girlfriend, but it's the hospital (there's only one apparently) in Istanbul (not Constantinople) telling him Bethany's in the ICU. Cue panic stations as everyone runs around. I guess this is another Issues storyline - about the importance of renewing your passport as Sarah's one has run out. Gail must be having a rest before her big exit storyline (which, since Martin Platt/Sean Wilson isn't coming back, I hope will be Jason returning from Thailand and whisking Gail away for a happy life in Bangkok, away from any future potential husbands) so David and Audrey come 'round to Sarah's to hinder rather than help. Having left Bertie with Ken (who broke his pelvis some weeks ago!) Daniel gets to Kate Yulaf Anıt Hospital, Istanbul (not Constantinople) to find out that Bethany has sepsis. Maybe Daniel could get some tips on this from Jack Webster? If he can see him through the cloud of vape smoke anyway. Oh and she also has a perforated bowel, which will lead to the next storyline.

DEE-DEE - JOEL - RONNIE - ED - CORONATION STREET - ITV

Deedee gets a call from the jewellers about the wedding rings, but she tells them to get rid of them. Joel is more practical - he picks them up to pawn them them in the We Buy Gold shop in the precinct. He says he'll give the money to a women's shelter, but given that we see him packing a bag to leave in the last ep, I think he'll be taking that cash with him. Ronnie wants to mete out some justice the Bailey way which involves Ronnie trying to film Ed winding up Joel so he'll punch him and break his bail conditions. Two probs with this plan; 1) it's entrapment, 2) Ronnie is the younger Bailey bro, surely he should be taking the punch. Oh and 3) Joel sees through their plan and also weasels out of a beating. Where is Michael in all of this? He has been very good at not saying 'I told you' so to his sis.

A press shot of Summer Spellman, Gemma and Bernie Winter, Paul Foreman and Billy Mayhew, Coronation Street

If only Paul had eye-typed some funeral instructions into his voice synthesizer, then we wouldn't have all these scenes of Billy arguing with Bernie about the funeral. There must be some compromise between Tribal Gathering drum circle and Psalm 23, non? Bernie wants to send off Paul "the Winter way", even though he was a Foreman. Incidentally, I know he was a bad lot, but is anyone going to tell Denny/Danny about his son's death? Bernie decides on an all day rave to honour Paul's memory: Ryan can spin the tunes, Dev can serve kebabs, Kit can shut the street (I think this is more of a council thing, but whatevs). To be honest, all this plan needs is a tombola and an appearance by the local football mascot to turn it into any neighbourhood festival that happens between Easter and mid-September (but if it puts an end to this bickering, then good).

Finally, they've paid Swan for this episode so she might as well be there to deal with Daisy and Dylan's confession about the wallet and Mason. Petty theft seems more like P.C. Tinker's wheelhouse, but so be it. Also: important news - Swain has got a new barrette for that famous blonde ponytail.

Oh, and there was a sweet bit with Roy telling Lauren about the model railway fair. Lauren must be the first teenage girl in history to be soothed by tales of narrow-gauge locos.

Rachel Stevenson - on bluesky

  1. As well as the issue about renewing your passport, we have: write a will while you can and appoint reliable executors; investigate cheap cosmetic deals before you go ahead. Bored with the Joel storyline but a potential Daisy/Kit/Jenny triangle could be interesting.

  2. I thought that hospital in Istanbul (not Constantinople) looked familiar!

  3. Roy and Lauren--what a sweet exchange! And the young woman who plays Lauren seems so good--such a lot of excellent young female actors seem to come in through Coronation Street as Roy's proteges! But this Bethany storyline--ridiculous, abrupt, unprepared for...In about all of 10 seconds, she discovers a vehement hate for herself and her own body; gets plastic sugery; suffers life-altering complications. Why do they do this to loyal viewers who are trying to enjoy and appreciate the show and the actors and their stories?! And of course, setting things up for a new triangle with Daisy. Daniel will realize that he is still in love with her and they will probably embark on an affair but he won't want to leave Bethany while she is struggling to come to terms with her stoma...So predictable and so artificial! Give Daisy someone new and exciting and leave Bethany and Daniel to glory in their mutually insufferable pretentiousness and sanctimony.

  4. These are rather speedy events for Bethany - she has cosmetic surgery, has a perforated bowel and then develops sepsis - all in the space of a few days... surely it would take longer than this for things to go downhill? She needs an exit plot line as she's pregnant IRL and will take maternity leave. I'm getting bored with Joel now , too. They are killing him off, apparently. I think Daniel and Daisy belong together myself. She ought to tell Kit to jog on.
