Simon Gregson interview: Will Steve start dating again?

How has Steve been coping in the wake of Tracy’s affair as it was a bit of a double whammy for him, his wife didn’t just have an affair, she had an affair with his idol

He’s been coping with it quite well I think, all things considered. He seems to have accepted she’s had an affair, well on the outside at least, but he’s absolutely devastated at how Tommy could do this to him. He gets why Tracy is attracted to Tommy but he’s just so upset that his idol has done this to him. I think there’s so much going on at once that he’s not properly put it together yet; his wife has had an affair, in his bed, with the guy who was decorating his house, who happened to be his favourite footballer. It’s all a little bit too much for Steve.

It has been a lot for Steve, have you enjoyed trying to find the humour in the story at times too?

It’s been written with humour so we haven’t really had to find it, it’s all been there for us in the scripts. It’s that typical Coronation Street, northern, humour in tragedy which has been fun to play.

Tracy admits she was bored and felt the relationship had gone stale, do you think that is not the way Steve felt?

I think Steve was just resigned to being Steve. He goes to work, he sees his best mate at work, he goes to the pub, he has a few pints, he goes home, he watches TV and he goes to bed. I’m not even sure he minds where that is. He’s a bloke, very very simple creatures (laughs). Whereas for Tracy, she’s living in her dad’s house, they’re all top of each other and I think she’s just had enough. She wants more for her life and she thinks the grass is greener which of course we all know it rarely is, well maybe it is for a while but then it’s just the same grass elsewhere. She may eventually start to realise that but in the meantime Steve’s very very hurt.

Do you think he hopes they could still get back together, especially with Tommy moving to Spain?

It’s all happened so quickly that I do think he still wants her back. He thinks this is just a flash in the pan, maybe he has let himself go over the years and maybe he needs to try harder, so he’s prepared to try change himself to save his marriage. He knows Tommy is going to Spain and this is his chance to get him out of the picture. So when he finds the letter, it’s like everything has fallen in his lap. He thinks if he gets rid of the letter, he can stick to his plan and put his family back together. Yes Tommy’s written a love letter to her, but they’ve had a whole life together, they’ve known each other since they were kids, surely she’s just being a bit daft. What he doesn’t realise is Tracy has genuine feelings for Tommy so not sure it’s going to work out quite this way for poor Steve.

Tracy did all the chasing with Steve over the years, did he think that after all his failed marriages that this one was it?

Tracy was always chasing Steve and after years of fighting it I just think he realised right she loves me, stop looking for something when it’s right in front of you, she loves you, you have a daughter together, make it work. So that’s what he did but now she’s changed her mind. Maybe she’s having a mid-life crisis.

If Tracy were to choose a life with Tommy over Steve, how do you think he’d be left feeling?

I think he’d be devastated but the thing is he’s been there many times before so I don’t think it would take him long to pull his socks up and just get on with it, life’s too short and all that.

Are you looking forward to possibly playing Steve on the dating scene?

I think it would be great if we see Steve having to go down the route of speed dating, online dating, maybe being single for a while. Steve could have a full on mid life crisis, maybe we could see him losing weight, changing his appearance, going to the gym. It could be a lot of fun and also a great excuse for me to make some changes in real life with him!

Do you think there could be anyone else on the street for Steve or would you like him to meet someone different after what Tracy’s done to him?

I think anyone will do, at this point in Steve’s life he’d be lucky to have anybody! If she’s got a pulse and she can make a sandwich I think Steve would be happy.

Have you enjoyed playing out this storyline and seeing Tracy and Steve’s marriage on the rocks as they’ve been pretty comfortable for a while now?

Yeah, it’s always fun doing argument scenes with Steve and Tracy because there’s always that thing in the back of Steve’s mind where she could pick up a pan and bludgeon him to death. So he’ll give as good as he gets to a point, then he’s like I need to back off or I may die. Tracy’s clearly a sociopath anyway so it is always fun and Kate is such the polar opposite of Tracy, that just makes it even more fun for us as friends to play out. It’s always better to have fun with the scenes otherwise it’s work and who wants to work for a living.

What’s it like having Matt Milburn back as Tommy, have you enjoyed that?

When Matt first came into the show six years ago we all got on like a house on fire and we had a right laugh and this time around it’s been just the same. Matt’s such a lovely guy and he’s very good at what he does so it’s just been really nice. Nice, fun scenes, we’ve all really enjoyed it.
