Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 3rd August

I am quite pleased with the return of the Gangsta Gary storyline (especially if Sarah becomes his moll (!)) - it makes a change from the terminally ill child storyline and the quad squad yawnfest. A masked up Sarah visits the ginger ninja in hospital and tells Gary she needs to go to the po-po. Gary reminds her that they blamed Calum in Gail's manhole 's death on Tony Stewart (I had actually forgotten the denouement of that story). Gary is concerned that Sarah is about to blab, so discharges himself from  Kate Oates Memorial.

Sarah-Lou lies to Adam, saying she went to the hospital because Gary saved her life. She also lies to the police, saying that she didn't dial 999 before the accident happened, even though the emergency operator says she heard the accident happen whilst Sarah was on the phone requesting the police. Sarah makes something up about her car being stolen. To say Adam looks circumspect is like saying there is a little illness going round at the moment.

Adam arrives in Casa Rosa as Gary is fleeing his flat with an overnight bag, having left 3 letters for Izzy, Nicola and Maria. He gets nowt out of Gary, but Gary gets out of him that Sarah has told the police diddly-squat and so he removes the letters and puts them in his coat (no doubt to be found by Maria later on).

D.S. Bernie finds out that Adam hasn't received the watch that Sarah bought from  her. And Adam adds this mystery watch to his dossier of evidence.

On a side note, has Gary been getting one of the nurses to pomade his hair?

Elaine/Philippa/Paula Wilcox approaches Sally in the cafe (socially distanced, of course) and explains she can't give evidence at Yasmeen's trial because the barristers will dig into her past and criticise her abandoning her son.

Geoff motors up and threatens Elaine who goes down into the ginnel of doom. "Stay away from me, stay away from the court and stay away from my son!" he shouts at her, observed by Fay(e). She backs away from him, terrified. Later, we see Geoff remove the SIM card from Elaine's phone and drop it down a drain. What's the ghastly ghoul up to now!?

The pub is doing a roaring trade with takeaway hotpots (and DeliverJen* Vodka-tons to Rita). Abi comes in for her carry out-lunch and mentions the twins going to Australia (hopefully not Melbourne!) and Gemma says she doesn't know how Abi can let it happen. "I'd die without my babies," says Gemma, who is in the pub without her babies, leading to Abi rushing out in tears.

Later, Abi says she's been selfish all her life and she's doing the best for the twins now by not contesting the move. Gemma gives her a socially distanced cuddle. Aw, it'd be lovely if these two became pals.

  1. Is Sarah that dumb not to realise that the only reason that Gary wants her to lie is if it comes out that Rick [whom Gary framed for the roof collapsing]about his killing Rick is so no one particurely Adam and Imram realise that Gary is the one responible for sabotaging the roof which led to Rana's death?
Nope, instead Sarah is lying to her husband for Gary who I doubt could care less about her.
I hope when the truth comes out about Gary sabotaging the factory roof that Sarah is arrested too as an accessory after the fact.
I'm also disappointed that the writers are going out of their way to ensure that Geoff along with Gary gets away with his abuse.

  2. Gary, Geoff and Gemma all in one episode... What are these writers trying to do to me? Pure torture!
Also, totally random question but is that creepy bistro dude still in it? Not seen him in ages. What's the point of his character?

  3. The Gary storyline has been annoying and disappointing. Gary has clearly not lived up to the ridiculous hype Iain Macleod that gave him. The characters have been dumbed down so much- Maria in Friday’s episode was awfully dumb, terrible writing for her. Why didn’t she mention about Liam? Sarah and Adam’s relationship has had no development at all and yet Coronation Street wants us to care about them. Gary is a horrible villain. His wannabe gangster act is embarrassing. The sooner this storyline ends the better. Oliver’s storyline is so much better, it’s not even close.

  4. Anonymous 21:56, I couldn't agree more with you. The storyline was hyped so much as being like something out of God Father and yet all we've gotten is Gary the clown plodding around trying (and failing) to look intimidating. Zero effort has gone into Maria and Gary's relationship or Adam and Sarah's, and Maria's stupidity has sunk to new lows. Worst part about the storyline for me is it's filled with no mark characters I don't care about (Ali, Derek, Kelly, Laura, loanshark Sharon and now they've roped bloody Brian and Bernie into it... who's next? Gemma?) Gary's a terrible villain. He's not scary, he's not interesting, there's literally nothing remotely compelling about it. And it drags on and on with no end in sight. Wish we could ressurect Phelan to bump off this pathetic wannabe gangster.

  6. The real problem with Gary is that Mikey North May be a really nice guy in the flesh but he is an appalling actor, which is why we laugh at him. On the other hand, the actor - Corrie actor’s names take a long time to sink into my head - who plays Geoff, is totally convincing and so that story is compelling, while we couldn’t give a monkey’s about Gary. Bring back his mother, I say - now she can act!

  7. Did Sarah really think her pathetic ‘stealing my car’ story was convincing. What about the police talking to Tyrone who saw Gary chasing her?

  8. We must of course remember that the heads of our Corrie loved ones contain absolutely no brains at all! I'm sure the scriptwriters' mission is to have us shouting at the screen....in which case they succeed with every episode

  9. One of my biggest pet peeves with Corrie is that the plot is driving the characters, so characters are behaving in ways they normally wouldn't to suit the story. Take Adam for example. He's a hotshot lawyer who's usually got his head screwed on and yet all we see him do is chase after Gary like some obsessive stalker. Why is he so bothered about Gary anyway? Because he's Sarah's ex? Is that it? Contrived or what! Adam's behaving like a total moron. Used to like his character, now I can't stand him.
Gary's 'super' Villain story will go down as one of the worst in the show's history. Can't believe it's the 60th anniversary this year and not only is coronavirus going to put a downer on it, but the likes of Gary Windyarse are going to be centre stage. God help us...

  10. I hope I'm wrong because otherwise it will be a very contrived ending to Geoff and Yasmeen's story. I expect Geoff bundled Elaine into his car, dumped her in a field far from civilisation and nicked her phone. She wanders around for weeks, is eventually found but can't explain how she got there. She's a missing person, though, so the police work out who she is, and she's secretly brought back to Weatherfield. Is the 'nobody will guess it' ending that Elaine is a surprise witness in Yasmeen's trial? Yasmeen is found not guilty but there isn't enough evidence to convict Geoff of coercive control. However, he is guilty of intimidation of a witness, perverting the course of justice, abduction etc etc. But I could be wrong... And, in other news, Gary is one of the least convincing Corrie villains. Still, there are worse things going on the world than dreadful soap storylines. We can only hope normal service will resume as soon as possible.

  11. I think the "unexpected ending" being teased is that Faye is a witness to Elaine's murder and that's what will ultimately get Geoff

  12. NOW - that last comment makes a lot of sense. She did witness the two of them last night!!

  13. Maybe Geoff and Gary can have a murder suicide pact and we can be rid of them both.
