Corrie's Ruxandra Porojnicu on human trafficking story

Corrie has been working with The Salvation Army on its human trafficking storyline. And Ruxandra Porojnicu, who plays Alina Pop (a great name by the way!), says that she hopes her character’s ordeal at the hands of human traffickers will bring more awareness.

In an interview with The Daily Star, Ruxandra said: “This was such an important story to tell and the response has been amazing. I’ve had so many messages from people who had no idea that it was happening here. Hopefully people are going to make sure that they know their rights before they travel to another country.

“But I think the Government has the most important part to play in this. They need to make greater communications for people coming here, so that they know their rights. It’s so easy for people from poor countries to be manipulated because all they want to do is put food on the table. It makes them so vulnerable.”

Ruxandra admits filming her character’s ordeal left her upset as she thought about the real-life victims of slavery.

She said: “I read a lot of stories from people who have been through what Alina has. I kept thinking what it must have been like for them. It really affected me emotionally and I felt it with all my body.”

A Salvation Army spokeswoman told the Daily Star Sunday they had seen a huge rise in people searching their website for information about modern slavery as a direct result of Corrie’s storyline.

If you suspect someone is a victim of modern slavery, call the 24-hour confidential helpline on 0300 303 8151.
