This week saw the beginning of Geoff controlling Yasmeen in ways she’s not aware of, but we, the audience know. He’s belittling her, nipping away at her confidence daily and it’s awful to see Yasmeen coming under such an attack, however subtle it is. Things come to a head when Yasmeen is mugged carrying the takings from Speed Daal to the bank. Geoff tells her she shouldn’t go outdoors, she should stay inside, with him. But Yasmeen’s not for being caged and she starts attending a self-defence class. When Alya brings Ryan and some DJ friends back to the house, Yasmeen joins them, has a drink and shows them her self-defence moves. Geoff, as you can imagine, is not best pleased.
It’s Steve’s birthday and he’s upset when Tracy doesn’t even get him a card. He’s got a wardrobe stuck in the middle of his living room (I’m reminded of Dirk Gently’s sofa stuck on the stairs) and he’s waiting to hear if his cabbie license will be renewed. In short, he’s got too much time on his hands. And so when he spies an advert offering a Magical Unicorn Party in a magazine, he decides to earn some cash by turning Tiny the horse into a unicorn and renting the old nag out. Tim’s against the idea but this doesn’t stop Steve from buying glitter and glue from Rita in the Kabin and making his own unicorn horns.
More lies this week from Robert as he gets caught in his web of deceit between mother of his unborn child, Vicky and girlfriend Michelle. He plans a secret wedding with Michelle while attending baby scans with Vicky. As I said last week, it’s hard to invest any emotion in this storyline as it’s been officially announced that the actors who play both Robert and Michelle are leaving.
Gary takes on Rick’s role as loan shark of the parish. He sets himself up in Rick’s old office and pays off his debts with a wad of cash he finds there. Has Gary got away with the perfect crime? Not likely in the world of soap. And true enough, a young girl comes looking for Rick. It’s his daughter. Just how will Gary explain his way out of this one, then?
Pregnant Gemma wonders about selling her story to a journalist from Hiya! magazine about expecting quads. But she’s crestfallen when the journalist tells her being pregnant isn’t the story, it’s the four babies she needs to sell the story to the mag. She warns Gemma that not all four babies may survive. This is something that Gemma is only too painfully aware of and upsets her no end.
Elsewhere this week, Maria has a girly night in … with Audrey and Gail. After a discussion about the merits of Meryl Street films (Sophie’s Choice, every time, for me) Gail wastes no time in chatting about David and Nick while Audrey falls asleep on the sofa. Maria wonders where it all went wrong.
And finally this week, David and Shona plan their wedding for six weeks’ time. David’s only hope is that he won’t be in prison by there, charged with stealing his grandma Audrey’s cash.
And that’s just about that for this week.
