The man who turned down Coronation Street

In this week's Guardian newspaper, there was an obituary to an actor called Jack Carr which I read with great interest. Jack Carr emerged in the mid-1960s, one of a crop of young, working-class graduates from Manchester University's drama department. He quickly established himself in TV drama usually playing villains, bent coppers or wayward boyfriends. And he also turned down a permanent role in Coronation Street.

It's an intriguing thing to read, and the actor must have felt sure in himself and his stage work and other television work to be able to say no to one of the biggest shows around. He did later take on a short-run role on Corrie, as police officer Tony Cunliffe, seen her in 1984 with Bet Lynch.

You can read the full obituary here.
