Did Corrie make a Maria marriage mistake last night?

Did Coronation Street make a mistake last night?

In the Rovers after the Mr & Mrs Quiz, David and Maria had a little chat in a booth. Maria had stood in for Shona at the quiz as David's partner.  Afterwards, this exchange took place. I've just had to watch it again this morning to be sure I had heard it right last night, but it looks like I did.

David jokingly asks Maria if they should get divorced after they played husband and wife in the Mr & Mrs Quiz.

Maria: "You didn't put a ring on it, did you?"
David: "Neither did anyone else."
Maria: "True story."

Except, if the exchange was meant to say that Maria had never been married before, then it's wrong. Maria married Liam Connor, hence Maria Connor (no longer Maria Sutherland).

Or have I got the whole scene wrong?

  1. I heard it and wondered what the writer was on about. Thank you for confirming the nonsense was what I thought.

  2. She also married that man wanting a Visa. Surely the writers would remember Liam though? Her name is Maria CONNOR after all? Unless it's a poorly written joke about nobody else being willing to do the quiz with her or something...

  3. I think it was meant to be reference to Shona as she was portending to stand in for her.

  4. I think that current writers are so caught up with the Maria loved Aideen scenario that they have truly forgotten that Maria was married to Liam. By the time this generation of Connors came on the scene with Johnny and Aiden, Paul and Liam have been long forgotten. There is never any mention of that connection at all. My mouth dropped open when that line was said, and I had to replay to make sure I heard it right.
