Pics: Behind the scenes at Underworld roof collapse

Underworld Roof Collapse - Facts and Figures

The scenes took 21 days to shoot

A crew of between 70 and 80 people per day plus cast and extras

Experts involved included the following:
              Stunt Coordinator
              Stunt Double for Sally
              Special Effects team Real SFX
              CGI - Space Digital
Real Urban Search and Rescue Officers
              Real Fire Officers
              Real Paramedics
              Drone shots c/o Ironbird

To make the collapse as real as possible there were many hours of research and planning involved. The design and production team looked at real life building collapses, researching roof construction, timbers etc to make it feel as real as possible.

The factory set on the Coronation Street lot was used during this shoot before stripping it out and moving all of the dressings into a specialist perfectly replicated Underworld set at Space Studios in Manchester.

Planning for the build started in October 2018 and we completed filming Monday 18th February after 6 shoot days in the stunt set. The studio was booked for 3 months for just 6 days filming as the design rig was complex and time consuming.

Alongside the original Underworld set and Space Studio Set the team had to create a separate Loading Bay area of the set for Sally’s fall. A lot of action took place on the Underworld roof itself before cutting to a smaller replicated section of roof and then a CGI green screen rostrum set.

The decision was made not to damage the structural integrity of the exterior of Underworld. What the viewer will see is a combination of scenic works, set dressing and CGI to give us the illusion that the roof has caved.
