New Villain for Coronation Street

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod this week said that a new villain will be joining the show.

As we already know from Iain MacLeod, Underworld will be knocked down next year. And this sends Carla Connor into a tailspin, causing mental health problems, which will be explored in a special standalone episode.

Now, Iain MacLeod has teased a little more on the identity of the new villain who causes the Underworld roof collapse next year.

With credit to Digital Spy.

Ian MacLeod said: "I won't tell you who it is - we're a long way off that yet. What I have always liked about Corrie is the ability to have villains like Hillman and Phelan who come in and burn bright and also the more complicated, long range villain like Mike Baldwin - ruthless, self serving and looking out for number one.

"We're designing a character in that latter type who can stay long term as an antagonistic person who's just messing up lives. The other thing I am attracted to is watching the genesis of that person, rather than bringing someone new in. By going with this character on this journey - their intentions are good and they rapidly snowball. It will be a very slow burn - but it is tempting to speed things up.

"By the end of 2019, there will be an unmistakably new and complicated villainous character on the cobbles. To begin with, they don't flip a switch that makes this person into a bad character - it's organic and through desperation and corruption of original intentions. It's about small choices which accumulate.

"It's someone we already know. Our commissioning editor Hugh said 'it's almost like the Godfather!' I wouldn't presume to compare what we do with one of the greatest films of all time but it has some similarities."

  1. I'm really struggling to think who this could be! Imran, Abi or Ali would probably be my top 3 guesses.

Struggling to pick who I think might die too. Maybe Izzy? Or Elsa?

  2. Elsa is a good shout for who might die. I thought it'd be Sinead.

As for the new villain, who seems to be a character with a history already, I wonder if it could be Peter?

  3. I think the villain is Nick. The spoilers make it sound like it is him

  4. I also think its Nick. Through the camera angles/editing in Mondays EP its clear he will be the one who steals Aud's money... Perhaps Lewis is causality #1?

    1. I think Nick could kill Lewis and Nick needs £40k and Audrey got £80k, that seems very convenient

Perhaps the reason why Nick is the villain is because of what happened with Lewis

  5. I think it's Nick, as well. The Phelan character was too evil to stay on the show. Mike Baldwin had several redeeming features and the producer/writers have realised that a long-term new villain must be sympathetic as well as ruthless. Nick's Achilles Heel are Leanne and Simon. He's also financially desperate though Peter may end up likewise during 2019. Peter's linked to Leanne and Simon so if we hear Leanne is going to have a big story next year, the villain is either of these two.

  6. Plus Iain Macleod compared the new villain to Mike Baldwin a lot

“Complicated”, “Ruthless”, “Self- Serving”, “Looking out for Number One”, that sounds a lot like Nick

  7. Tracy Barlow has been ruthless, self serving looking our for number one for years, as have many other characters. So what is new about yet another one? A character like Hayley Cropper who was compassionate, caring, unselfish, had moral compass, now that would be radical this moment on the street. .

    1. Based on the spoilers, I think the villain would be a completely new villain

I think it would be Nick because he has those traits, but I don’t he has ever been an obvious villain

  8. It’s be nice to see a ‘villan’ that doesn’t become a serial killer, akin to Mike Baldwin. That would actually bring more realism back into the show.

  9. Sounds like Nick--since he came back, they've really been ramping up the nasty, superior side of his personality and showing his delight in screwing things up for others. The constant superior smirk--joined with a sudden competence and charm at the factory--suggests a revisioning of the character as a Baldwin clone. But he has some soft spots remaining too, just as Baldwin did. And perhaps he'll continue the epic Baldwin-Barlow rivalry with Peter. Adam Barlow was originally meant to be the new Baldwin, but his character and the actor just didn't work in that role--not enough nastiness, too much charm. But Nick fits well.

  12. My guess is Rana, based on the recent "coming soon" trailer.
