8. The Tram Crash (2010)

What better way to celebrate the show turning an impressive 50 years old than to have a night of complete and utter carnage shown over one week, including an hour long live episode? The week carried the subtitle "Four Funerals & A Wedding" and it certainly didn't disappoint, okay one of the deaths was only an unseen taxi driver but it's always fun to be kept guessing right up to the end.

So a tram derailed, crushing the bistro and ploughing into Dev's cornershop, as well as causing damage and devastation to pretty much the whole street. Love rivals Nick Tilsley and Peter Barlow were trapped in the bistro along with Ashley Peacock, and Molly Dobbs and baby Jack were trapped in the cornershop. Molly had told poor Tyrone that Jack was Kevin's and not his, and Ashley was at loggerheads with his wife Claire who wanted to move to France, so it was fair to assume they propably wouldn't be coming out alive.

Ashley died fairly early on after sacrificing himself to help Nick get out with an unconcious Peter, his dying answer phone message to Claire was played later on in the week in emotional scenes, and while baby Jack was pulled out (thank goodness otherwise there would be no number 4 on this list), Kevin's wife Sally sat with a dying Molly who told her everything and, horrified by what she was hearing, Sally left Molly at the last minute to die alone (Molly died in the live episode so respect to Vicky Binns who must've come back after about six weeks just to film her own death). And then of course we mustn't forget psycho John Stape who used the disaster to murder Charlotte Hoyle and make it look like an accident, all while his wife Fiz was giving birth to their daughter Hope three months early. Absolute chaos, and I loved it! Roll on the sixtieth anniversary episode!
