William Roache Interview: Will Ken tell Daniel the truth?

Following Daniel and Sinead’s wedding, finding out about Sinead’s pregnancy and now Daniel announcing that he’s enrolling on a masters course, is Ken happy that Daniel is finally settled?
Yes, after the terrible trials and tribulations with Daniel's mother, and to some extent Ken, he’s happy that Daniel has found love, they have a nice family environment and things are good between Ken and Daniel. Everything is looking rosy but this is Coronation Street!

There was bad feeling between Ken and Sinead when her and Daniel were first together, is that now resolved?
Last year Ken did this terrible thing and virtually persuaded Sinead to have that abortion, which was awful. It would be understandable if Sinead never forgave him but they have repaired their relationship.

Does Ken now accept that Daniel and Sinead are right for each other and should be together?
Yes totally, he’s completely changed his views on Sinead. Daniel is a very complicated guy and Ken was worried that he’d never find happiness, after the problems with his mother and with him, so Ken’s really delighted to see that Sinead has given him some balance. He’s completely reversed all his previous opinions about Sinead and he’s grown very fond of her.

How does Ken react when Sinead breaks down and tells him what she’s going through with the cervical cancer diagnosis?
Sinead doesn’t confide in him voluntarily, Ken happens to be at the hospital when she comes out of a room in tears having been given the news. She rushes off home but he goes round after her and puts in her in a position where she tells him. He becomes her confidante, even though it wasn’t through choice.

What does Ken think Sinead should do?
He wants her to tell Daniel, he says ‘you must tell him, you can’t keep him out of this.’ But Sinead says ‘it’s my baby, my body, my cancer.’ She begs Ken to keep quiet but it’s really difficult for him, he wants to do the honourable thing but this is his son’s life as well.

Are Ken’s loyalties torn?
Ken’s loyalties are totally torn, all his instincts are saying to tell Daniel but then he also wants to honour Sinead’s feelings. It’s a terrible dilemma, she’s got cervical cancer and has to choose whether to have the full treatment and terminate her pregnancy or just have a more gentle treatment where the baby could survive and so could she, but that’s a risk. It has to be her choice but Ken is in an impossible situation, whatever he decides to do here will upset someone. It’s heartbreaking for Ken.

If Ken does keep quiet how would Daniel feel if he ever found out?
If Ken keeps this from Daniel it could completely shatter his relationship with Daniel.

We’ve seen Ken recently playing a slightly lighter role with Claudia and Audrey, do you enjoy playing the more comedic side to Ken at times?
I love playing the drama and all the big scenes in the Barlows but the comedy has been good to do recently. After a full day it does seep into you and lift your mood, I always found that in theatre, and it’s really nice to do.

Are you enjoying the Ken/Claudia dynamic?
Rula is lovely, I’m so lucky to have some of the people I work with and she’s one of them, she’s wonderful and so good. I love playing the lighter stories with Claudia and Audrey, the flirtations between them, the slight jealousies and the stories from the past. Whether there will ever be a long term relationship between them I’m not sure, I think there’s much more to play this way.
