I've always been fascinated by the jobs people do on the Street.
Like many Corrie fans, I'm staggered by how Rosie and Leeanne walked into a top- notch legal secretary's position. Neither of them had any experience. There had no suitable references, and no relevant qualifications either.
How an earth did Sophie, as a former window cleaner and shop assistant, manage to clinch a restaurant manager's job?
The Rovers and the corner grocery have provided a steady stream of employment, giving part- time shifts to any characters who happen to hang around like spare parts. Like Gail. What does the former bistro cleaner actually do?
Again, I'm puzzled how Sarah and Gemma were offered jobs pulling pints. Neither of them have a background in bar work. We're supposed to assume they're given training off camera.
The factory is the main employer, with a constant change of ownership over the years. Despite big stores such as BHS closing and the majority of UK underwear being manufactured overseas, amazingly, there seems to be a big demand for the Underworld frillies. Staff are hired, sacked and re- hired on the flimsy ping of knicker elastic. And who's taken Sally's job, now she's tucked away in prison?
Other places for Corrie residents to work include Dev's, the kebab shop, the chippy, Kev's garage, Streetcars (I'd love to see fat Brenda!) Preston's Petals (For goodness sake, change the name Tracey!) The Bistro, Speed Dhaal, the medical centre, Roy's, Audrey's, the builder's, and more recently, the rather tatty solicitors.
But my favourite place to work would be The Kabin. However, I find it difficult to believe that Rita, in her eighties, would still have the desire to rise at 5 to do the papers. But who delivers them? Where are the paper/boy girls? This is an ideal opportunity for Dev's 2 kids, (Asda and Aldi, as Gloria once retorted) Simon, Amy or Faye.
Hang on. Sorry to go down the back alley of thought - but where is Faye? She appeared briefly after Anna's return, reunited with Seb, and was never seen again.
Anyway, back to The Kabin. I'm mesmerised by all those sweetie jars. Yet no - one seem to fancy a quarter of mint imperials any more, do they? My guess is, Rita mainly makes a living from flogging fags.
I'm looking forward to new ventures - Peter's snooker hall, Daniel and Sinead's vintage dress shop (I've a funny sort of feeling that this project isn't going to launch) and Maria's sassy salon.
Well, I must go. I'm going to ask Roy if he can offer me a few shifts at the caff.
I've never yielded a frying pan in a professional manner before, but in the wonderful world of Corrie, somehow that doesn't seem to matter.

And yet poor Liz had no option but to return to working at the Rovers with her former lover and his wife because there were no other jobs available for her(!)in Weatherfield or, perish the thought, Manchester.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, echoes what annoys me most, so unrealistic. Plus - BeverleyH - perish the thought that anyone else could work away from the Street.
ReplyDeleteMaybe next thing we know Liz will be at Underworld, taking Sally's place while she's gone, lol
ReplyDeleteLiz being a medical receptionist for a while was also pretty unbelievable. Didn't Sean also do the job for a while?
ReplyDeleteHa ha, they all got their jobs through nepotism!
ReplyDeleteThe only place I'd want to work is the law office - the rest are low paying, hourly wage, labour jobs (other than the owners and managers). Or perhaps the school.
