Bev Callard interview: Liz reunites with Katie and Jim

How does Liz feel when Jim turns up at Steve’s stag do this week?

I think first of all when he appears at the stag do she is really shocked and completely horrified. She is really worried that Jim is going to hurst Steve, that is her main priority at that point. There is really bad blood between them. She is not concerned about herself at all she just feels Steve has enough on his plate with marrying Tracy, and everything else and trying to juggle Amy and Oliver.

What does she say to him?

They go into the back room the night of the stag do to have a chat because Steve won’t entertain him at all. At first she is very abrupt with him and defensive of Steve but then she sees that Jim is so relaxed and almost his old self she softens a little bit and the when he asks her to meet for lunch as he wants to chat about something I think secretly she wants to go and she gets very dressed up to go, there is that something that pulls them together she is like a moth drawn to a flame, they both are.

What happens at the Bistro?

She dresses to the nines, she has the war paint on, it is her armour, but she wants him to know that she has coped very well without him even though she really hasn’t, she has gone from one trauma to another and so she is quite enjoying the lunch but she feels he is preoccupied. When he breaks the news that Katie is alive she just thinks it is ridiculous and she can’t accept it. She thinks he is deluded and that maybe he is being conned into believing something that is not true.

Does she meet Katie that day?

Yes later on at the lunch they sit and talk and he points out a girl in the bistro on another table and she walks over and says ‘hello mum’.

How does Liz react?

Liz just wants to hit her, she thinks it is ridiculous, she goes back to her base instincts of being a lioness protecting her family and herself and almost fishwife status she goes down into the gutter emotionally as well. She is very angry at the whole situation and very confused.

Is Jim able to calm her down?

Jim sends Hannah away and Liz and Jim go to the memorial garden and sit and chat he is very calm bout it and he tells her is not being conned, this girl had been looking for them, she has been brought up in Australia and she has the same illness as Jim which is what led her to look for her biological parents.

What makes her start to realise he is telling the truth?

She starts to realise this was as big a shock to him and he is ill and has been coping with all this, he has a walking stick which is a shock to Liz seeing him like that has wounded her. She might not want to get back with him she doesn’t wish him any harm and she can now see he is ill. That begins to set the seed in her head that this is true. Then it just takes her over, she wants it to be true. She meets the girl and sees these big brown eyes and she really really knows this is her daughter and she has of course seen the DNA test.

Does she want to start getting to know?

She gives Hannah a necklace, Hannah wears the initial H round her neck like Liz wears the initial L. Hannah says they have the same taste in jewelry and Liz is really drawn to her. Liz goes shopping and buys a necklace with two hearts on for Hannah to say now our hearts are together and no one will keep us apart again.

What does Eileen think about it all?

Eileen is much more suspicious of Hannah but Liz doesn’t want to hear that, she just wants Eileen to be happy for her.

How does Steve react?

Jim breaks the news to Steve but Steve does not believe it at all, even if Steve did want to believe it he has got Tracy in his ear and of course Tracy has got the bit between her teeth.

They do some searching and call Liz and Jim together to say that they don’t think Hannah is who she says she is and Steve wants to do his own DNA test. Jim says that he believes her and he has got a meeting with a lawyer about compensation and claiming against the hospital.

Will they claim against the hospital?

They have got a massive case against the hospital, Liz doesn’t care about the financial rewards in connection with this. Liz is thinking my goodness not only have you had this tragedy of losing a baby you now start to think of what you have missed out on and no one can give you those years back. But Steve does start to take notice when money is involved and starts to be more on board in typical Steve fashion.

Does Liz feel that she wants them all to be together as family again?

It is very early days and her emotions are all over the place, obviously she is drawn to jim, there is something there between them that never goes away, they are not right for each other but maybe this will change things.

  1. She's Andy's girlfriend and he's put her up to it. He's provided his DNA sample for her to use as hers. She would probably refuse a DNA test with Steve because it wouldn't match unless she's got a stock of Andy's. Usual reason, money. Andy's broke and wants some of the compo from the hospital. If we hear that Andy's coming back, that will confirm it for me.

  2. Gender would be wrong!

  3. Hannah rather than Katie needs correcting. Hannah is the actress and Katie the character.

  4. Unless Katie has been brought up as Hannah in Australia.

  5. This is an incredibly ridiculous storyline and I am not looking forward to it at all. Two families on one tiny little street have had their children switched at birth! Also not looking forward to Jim's return.

  6. Maybe the compo will let the Macdonalds buy the Rovers back.
