Last night in America, the annual Oscar Awards were given out for the best in the film industry.
Julie Foy is the Associate Producer for The Silent Child, a movie that has just won an Oscar award for best Short Film (Live Action).
The Silent Child is about a profoundly deaf little girl who learns to communicate vis British Sign Language and how it changes her life. It's based on a true story and the child actor who plays the part in the film is deaf herself.
What on earth, you ask, does this have to do with Coronation Street?
Julie Foy played Gina Seddon, Sally Metcalf's younger sister back in the day. Gina is currently played by Connie Hyde.
In the early days, Gina was a tearaway teen, chasing boys, running rings around her parents and criticizing big sister Sally when she took her sister in. Then, finally, Gina left the Street after receiving 1000 pounds from her father's estate. Until last year, her name was mentioned on occasion and Sally would pay a visit now and then, most recently to recover from her breast cancer.
Julie Foy has worked mainly on stage with a few films and television.

I like this film, and I hope that Coronation Street will eventually introduce a deaf character that USE British Sign Language and make them an intergal part of the community. We are around, we live in a street full of hearing people everyday, but we are not represented on screen at all!
