Leanne's just come back from spending time with Toyah's mum, Janice. Before that, Leanne was in France visiting her own mum Stella. It's started me thinking about Coronation Street characters who are still very much part of the show in that they're mentioned often - even though we rarely see them. So here's my top five and I'd be interested to find out if you can think of any more.
Steve's twin brother Andy McDonald. In the Corrie world, Andy's living in Spain, providing a handy bolthole for Liz and Steve to escape to when things prove too much on the Street.
Ah, St Ella of the Back Room. How I miss you... not. She's in France and I hope she flaming well stays there, never to darken the cobbles with her Cockney accent again.
And Audrey's son, Steven Reid in Canada, or is it Milan?
Are there any more characters you can think of who still get mentioned, but we never see them any more?

Bev Unwin was another, when Deirdre was still around. Mavis occasionally still gets a mention from Rita. Emily is in that category at the moment, but watch this space:) Martin Platt, who we will actually be seeing soon. Bill Webster, when Kevin needs to disappear. Sylvia, when Roy needs to disappear. Characters who are never mentioned, but should be, include Michelle's missing sons (Alex may be back soon) and Dev's various children aside from the twins (notably Amber:)
ReplyDeleteI actually miss Stella. If she were still on the show she would most likely be with Johnny Connor
ReplyDeleteEddie, Gary's father, is mentioned very occasionally. I was never an Eddie fan but it's plausible that Gary would tell him that his mother's in prison. Why not Eddie rather than Owen sort Phelan out?
ReplyDeleteI've read many negative comments about Stella over the years, but never any specifics as to why she was so disliked. Can anyone enlighten me?
ReplyDelete(Canadian viewer)
I believe the reason so many viewers disliked Stella is because of her very bad version of a Cockney (Manchester) accent, which doesn't mean anything to Canadians. It's a regional "thing". In Canada we don't have to many changes in our dialect except for the maritimes and Newfoundland for sure. I liked Stella also, but I can see now why they would never think of bringing her back.
ReplyDeleteStella was installed in the Rovers and was then pushed into every storyline possible and some that wheren't possible. She invited every punter to the back room for a chat if they were feeling the least twinge of anxiety about anything at all. They made her out to be the best friend and confident of many and then they made the ultimate insult when Betty died. They made out like she was "so close" to Betty that she had to be one of the people that went to clear out Betty's flat, this after only being in the show about 6 or 8 months during which time Ms. Driver had not been on screen at all and subsquently had passed away. It felt to most fans like Stella was forced on us.
ReplyDeleteI liked Stella, was sad to see her go.
ReplyDeleteI like Stella - but 4 bottles is my limit these days ;)
ReplyDeleteI always found St Ella was inserted into every possible storyline and then some. I didn't like how she was played and she always wore beige. I'm Canadian and even I could tell that the accent wasn't the same as everyone else's.
ReplyDeleteJudging by the accent on Stephen Reid he was never in Canada. If I remember correctly, the actor was American and he used that weird accent Americans use when they're mocking us. If he ever comes back I hope they bring in a Canadian actor to play him.
Fat Brenda: Often mentioned by Streetcars staff, but never seen.
ReplyDeleteI cringe every time someone says they don't like Stella. I really liked her and was probably glad she was in a lot of storylines. It's probably not gonna happen but I would welcome her, should she ever return.
ReplyDeletethanks everyone for the feedback. i liked her, and regarding her accent - was she supposd to be from Manchester or London? Im very aware of the diff accents feom all around the UK...

Stella (or the actress who рlayed her) will always be Cindy Beale from Eastenders. Sometimes an actor cannot simрly switch soaрs and exрect viewers to forget.
ReplyDeleteSteve's brother Andy in Spain comes up from time to time. He hasn't been on the show since I've been watching it (circa 2001) - or at least not memorably as I don't remember it. :)
ReplyDeleteMary often mentions her mother, but we haven't seen her yet. Also Roy's mother, I would love to see her return to the cobbles.
