Coronation Street Friday 1st December episode review

Hiya! It’s just Jordan with the first Friday review of December. Yes, that’s right – it’s finally December, which means only one thing in my world: a guiltless loop of Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’. However, I have taken a break from it just to give you my thoughts on Friday’s trip to our favourite hive of ridiculous drama.
Bethany’s back, like we knew she would be, and she’s here to help Mary, who in recent weeks has made a sudden shift from the farcical comic we know and love to an overly dramatic mess. As the day starts on the cobbles, Tracy spots her skivvy Mary across the Street and yells at her that she is already twenty minutes late. She issues a five-second warning, so Mary obviously uses those five seconds – and the rest of the day it would seem to go on a spree with Bethany.  Up until reuniting with Bethany, it’s clear that Mary is in a world of her own. She’s worried about long-lost son Jude, his ever-cheery wife and of course, her grandson, George.  Angie is still avoiding Mary, but happily divulges all information on the wellbeing of her son to anyone but Mary, which leaves the former comedy character fraught with worry. It turns out that George is fighting away in hospital – much like most residents of the Street recently – and Bethany, still determined to help Mary after she flew in to rescue her from her last issue, vows to set Mary’s mind at rest. Mary drives the pair of them to the hospital and waits in the car park while Bethany has a stalk round for Jude, in order to get the latest on the long-lost. Unfortunately, during this time, Mary has been spotted in the massive Preston’s Petals van by the woman who smiles less than Posh Spice. Moments later, a police officer turns up in the car park , having received a harassment complaint. After Mary is issued with a load of police jargon, she is relieved to hear from Bethany that George is doing okay. This leaves Angie to coldly tell Norris in the Rovers that Mary is unstable, and that they will be moving back to South Africa as soon as possible. Ta-ra then, love!

#Kana has dominated social media platforms for weeks now, and we were certainly given a massive dose of Kate and Rana’s love dilemma in Friday’s episodes. Up until now, Kate has decided to shelve all her lovelife problems by planning to run off to Spain. However, she ends facing them head on. Remember that street food business Rana and Zeedan set up which pops up every now and then? The one that Rana somehow set up around her full-time job as a nurse? There’s a food fayre on and Zeedan ends up having to work at the Bistro, leaving Kate as the only one possibly suitable to accompany Rana. Oh no! Fate intervenes, and their van starts to smoke. After spending some time getting professionally offended by everything Rana says, the two women confess their love for each other and share a few heated moments in the clapped out van, almost being caught by the husband and the friend. In the space of a few hours and after a few bits of issue vs religion led dialogue, Kate has decided not to move to Spain, and Zeedan has decided to start up a cafĂ© without consulting Rana, much to her fury. He’s even enlisted Kate to help now she’s not moving to Spain, unwittingly setting himself up to be in the firing line of an affair storyline.  Luke has sussed it out though, but hasn’t said anything. He lectures the pair on monogamy (I am so sick of this constant insistence that cheating is the most evil thing in the world), and like most characters in these circumstances pretends it has everything to do with him, when in fact, it doesn’t.  Rana candidly promises to tell Zeedan the truth.

Elsewhere, Todd has been doing a “Voggle” search about Adam’s mother’s death. As we know, Billy was in the car that crashed into Adam’s mother and killed her. Adam is furious that Todd has been digging, but since Billy has suddenly decided to feel guilty after all these years, it is easy to see why. Adam laments to Todd about how he hates Christmas, so Todd invites him round for an awkwardly early Christmas dinner, assuring him that a threesome is not on the cards. Because, oh yes, let’s make a joke about how all gay men are sex obsessed. Anyway, Billy has invited Eva round and during dinner the vicar and the apparent solicitor end up in an argument, leaving Eva and Adam to rekindle the flame that briefly sparked a few months ago. As well as all that, Phelan made some more threats towards Gary – who has had “one last” Ukranian job offer, and in being the shining light she always is, CinderGemma thought her Prince Charming had dumped her. That is until he turned up at the Rovers with a bouquet of flowers bigger than her head. Unfortunately though, this freaks Gemma out. She's never been shown such affection before and locks herself in the pub loos. What followed was a charming scene in which Rita told her to get a grip, even threatening to knock the toilet door down or take him for herself. Soon, Gemma is whisked off for a posh meal with her fella, her inhibitions gone. Please don’t let him have a sinister secret or a dark past. We need some light in the show right now, and no character is more deserving of it than CinderGemma!
Again, an okay-ish couple of episodes. The saving graces were undoubtedly Gemma and Rita, and I am also more than happy to have Bethany back on screens.  I've said this before, but I'll never stop watching Corrie even though it doesn't excite me much at the minute. We're creatures of habit.
As always,

Thanks for reading!

  1. It is time and well past time that this business with Phelan comes to an end. His antics are now starting to get boring and after 40'years of watching Coro I am now considering not watching this "soap" any more

  2. Can I just tell you, I've just been doing a you gov survey about the street! It asked what storylines and characters I liked and hated, and there was a section asking if you want to see more or less of certain characters. One of these was Emily! How can you possibly see less of Emily! It felt good to vent my anger! Tptb must be worried if they are paying to find out what people think. They could just read this of course!

Great review, hope you don't mind me posting this on your thread.

  3. Granted cheating is not the most evil thing in the world, but Luke obviously has a strong sense of morality and doesn't think it's right for Rana to cheat on her husband who is his girlfriend's brother and make a fool out of him.
I didn't like seeing Aidan cheat on Eva and yet instead of having Kate do the right thing and back off,as a member of the 'Cheating Connors',the writers have another relationship destroyed.

  4. I think Luke’s dilemma is that, against his will, he’s been let into the secret, so now it DOES have something to do with him: he’s placed in the intolerable position of being complicit in deceiving one of his friends or betraying a confidence he never wanted to be part of in the first place. Anyone with an ounce of empathy, who’s ever been in this position, does not want to be the one to break the news to the deceived husband (you feel it’s not really your place to do so), but to remain silent will be seen as him being part of the deception.

  5. I agree, and Alya is going to be upset too. Poor Luke to be in the middle.
