Welcome to another Wednesday Weathefield review. A trip down the cobbles, a chance to catch up ahead of tonight's episode, and let's forget the football debacle!(Rita reminded me of it though with Jack's birthday gift - cheers Reet!)
Tonight's episode contained a few strands of storylines that are compelling the cobbles, and one or two that don't need much of my mention. We begin with Robert readying himself for the hearing (what with Will's reintroduction, I've lost interest already).
Meanwhile, Michelle is maudlin, morose and muddling in the impending possible doom (forever the drama queen is our 'Shell). Rosie continues her quest to help Gemma 'Subtle' Winter who worries for Rita, our Rosie also advises a worried Robert (positive thinking, #perfect life), oh she's a one!
I also feel compelled to let everyone know that I really like Imogen already. Will she partner with Kate? I hope so. I also feel that Rana is hiding something. Is she harbouring feelings for Kate or confusion over something unmentioned?.

A recently revived Faye (where has she been?) confides in Alex (likewise) that her relationship with Seb has crumbled. Young Seb appears to have changed persona somewhat recently, is he hiding something?
Somebody else that's hiding something (or rather someone) is Phelan. This fantastic storyline continued at pace tonight. Phelan still draws a fine line between absolute psychosis and a twisted version of Florence Nightingale. He fills Andy with antibiotics and hopes to find a new hideout to hold his captive. After chastising a concerned Liz, Phelan raises Eileen's heckles, upon consulting Nicola, she decides to visit the hideout herself. When hearing Eileen enter, Andy shows no interest in trying to escape or raise alarm. Worrying. The antibiotics have either lowered his resolve or he's gaining strength?. Phelan, on the other hand, is as coy, devious and conniving as he can be. Promising Eileen he his buying / selling the house, I wonder who's house is this exactly?.
Eileen is fooled and equally overjoyed by Phelan's devious dealing and exclaims 'what a good man you are Pat Phelan!', he really isn't Eileen!. Has Andy developed Stockholm syndrome?. The trapped twosome continues, as they tussle and battle, in that dinghy scene stealing cellar. Some of the finest scenes in recent Coronation Street history?. They throw words at each other, as though they are in a play by Harold Pinter. It's a theatrical showdown laced in darkness- incredible acting!.
I'm sure we will see how evil he can be, and even though we can guess a comeuppance is imminent, I personally would like Phelan on screen for as long as possible!
Less impressed with Roberts non sentencing though. Wouldn't it have been better if he had gone to the 'big house' for a bit (actor takes holiday) and Will could have riled Michelle even more? I kind of enjoy it. Kym Marsh acts her socks off and just like Leanne had recently, I think it's time Michelle had some comedy and a change of character. Maybe a reconciliation with Steve?.
The true change of personality, however, is reserved for our Rita. As she continues to fade with forgetfulness and with such a stoical performance, the legendary Barbara Knox convinces us that something truly isn't quite right with 'The Kabin' legend.
These Wednesday episodes continue to enlighten, engage and enthrall. I'm 'Phelan' good about it!.
It's almost like we could do with another Wednesday episode...

Me me me me chelle - yes if ever a character were in need of a personality transplant is she. However, it isnt as if she's a new character who had the first appearance, went away for a bit, and came back all nicely tweaked and watchable (think Zeedan). She's been moaning and crossing her arms and making stupid assumptions for over a decade with less glimmer of decency than Pat Phelan (ex; the antibiotic charade). No transplant is gonna fix this mess, IMHO, unless she transplants herself permanently back to Ireland.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of, Michelle's job at the bistro was supposed to be temporary while Leanne is on maternity leave. As I live abroad, I dont know a couple of things: how long do British moms normally take, and are their jobs guaranteed to be waiting for them upon return? Leanne was good in the bistro and the staff seemed to like her. The fight for the manager job could be interesting.
Statutory Maternity Leave is 52 weeks. It’s made up of:
ReplyDelete•Ordinary Maternity Leave - first 26 weeks
•Additional Maternity Leave - last 26 weeks
You don’t have to take 52 weeks but you must take 2 weeks’ leave after your baby is born (or 4 weeks if you work in a factory).

I would rather see Michelle leave than Phelan.
ReplyDeleteWhat a scene when he thought Andy was dead but then he revived....Pat hugged him close and even kissed him!
This character is so dimensional!
The two actors are playing this so well - Pat and Andy....wow.
Michelle couldn't be funny if her life depended on it.
ReplyDeleteExcellent comments - Abby and TVOR! I also cannot abide Michelle and would absolutely love to see the back of her - actually she could take boring Robert with her. I would love to see someone new take over the Bistro and bring Leeanne back from maternity leave.
ReplyDeleteSince seeing that photo of Tristan Ginnel earlier in the week I am now too distracted by Robert's hair to notice the storyline (is it dyed, is it a wig, if it's a wig, can I spot it moving)?
ReplyDeleteRapunzel, Rapunzel, let it go it's just hair. You crack me up.
