Coronation Street episode review, Wednesday 31 May 2017

It has been an absolutely gripping Big Week on Corrie so far, and day three is no exception. The stage is set with Daniel locked in the bathroom while frantic Ken tries to talk him round and Denise stands in dismay, Nick sinking steadily while being badmouthed elsewhere, and Shona lying unconscious courtesy of Nathan’s heavies while another evening for his friends looms large for Bethany.

Gemma, a dead bird and an under-ladder snog for Brian and Cathy, which flies in the face of his superstition, is the only light relief. That and the sight of Erica, although that just reminded me of my disappointment that she is leaving, so for me her job of distracting Anna while Kev and Tyrone set up a surprise birthday party for her didn’t quite have the intended effect.

Seeing Nick panic as he sinks deeper is far from easy viewing, but Peter and Steve’s about turn from bad mouthing him to searching for him comes on quicker than the tide, the sight of which is quite arresting, and this ultimately leads to his rescue. It wasn’t looking good at all, and I did wonder at Peter’s barrage of insults designed to make Nick fight for survival; he was clearly a stationary object at the mercy of the sand and water. I was actually flabbergasted that he survived, and was full sure a beach induced demise lay in store for Gail's eldest.

Things are very grim at Nathan’s where he supplies Bethany with all of her clothing, takes off her engagement ring, and invites more men around than we’ve previously seen in the flat. She has already thrown a present from Sarah in the bin, so it seems she’s not going anywhere despite her apparent discomfort.

With Nathan spiking her already alcohol-laden drinks, it's not long before she’s under the influence. When she spots a girl coming out of the bedroom and accuses her of wearing her necklace to which the response is, Nathan buys them for all the girls. Bethany rages, and Nathan takes her offside.

Mel continues with that shifty look she’s often sporting. It’s a mixture of knowing doubt, fear, and disapproval, but she appears so completely controlled by Nathan herself that it seems actions don’t necessarily follow any feelings she might have regarding what’s happening.

Meanwhile, Shona lies unconscious and is rescued by Craig on his way to see Bethany. It’s sweet to hear him recall his CPR training out loud, but it’s not needed as she appears to come around as he calls an ambulance.

Rob Mallard continues to play an absolute blinder as Daniel suffers dreadfully in the aftermath of his mother’s return. Ken is frantic and in as much control of the situation as he can be while Denise looks more at sea than Nick. As she blames her prolonged absence on a mental breakdown, Ken tries to make her see the impact that abandoning her son has had on him, and that her arrival back couldn’t have happened at a worse time.

Meanwhile Sinead discovers the blood soaked poetry book in front of Chesney who we can only presume called the police, as there’s no way on earth that DS MacKinnon would’ve made the deduction or known to find him there. Daniel admits to attempting to murder his father and is arrested while Ken tries to stop it and Denise remains agape.

High drama is the name of the game this week, and while it’s a difficult watch, I have been glued to it and will continue to be. I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t usually want to see some of what’s being portrayed, but the performances have been second to none, and I would happily watch Rob Mallard in particular in every scene.

I’m already waiting for 9pm tomorrow, and a Thursday Corrie does hold a little novelty factor. I will enjoy forgetting it’s on, then remembering, and feeling extra excited at some point tomorrow. For now, I’m going to take my golden moment of opportunity for a cuppa after all that drama.

Antony Cotton supports SSAFA's Big Brew Up

Antony Cotton, who plays Sean Tully in Coronation Street, is once again supporting the SSAFA's Big Brew Up event.

The SSAFA is the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association. And the Big Brew Up is an event to encourage people to have a cup of tea and a slice of cake with friends, shake a tin and donate some money to the charity.

Speaking to Inside Soap magazine this week, Antony also talked about his current storyline where Sean is living with Norris. He said: "I miss being in the Grimshaw house because that's been my home for the past 14 years and I love the dynamic there. But we certainly haven't seen enough of Sean and Norris together in their house. What do they talk about over breakfast? We need to see more of that!"

I can only agree, and feel it's a missed opportunity that we haven't seen Norris and Sean's domestic arrangements.

You can find out more about The SSAFA Big Brew Up here.

British Soap Awards: Live Blogging - Yay or Nay?

The British Soap Awards were going to be shown live this Saturday night. However, that has now changed and you can read more on that here.

Now here's our dilemma.  If the Soap Awards were going out live, I had planned that our team would be at our keyboards and phones ready to blog, tweet, facebook and instagram the winners as they were announced.

But now that the Soap Awards aren't going to be shown on TV until Tuesday 6 June, I have a question to ask of you all.

You see, the last time we blogged the British Soap Awards as they were being won by Coronation Street  we came in for an AWFUL lot of flak from people who didn't want to know who had won until they'd seen it on TV,

So - my question is - do you want us to bring you details of Coronation Street winners in the British Soap Awards on Saturday 3 June when the awards show happens...

or

...would you rather wait and find out on Tuesday 6 June when it's shown on TV?

Please let us know in the comments below.

Either way, we will still be blogging red carpet arrival pictures on Saturday 3 June. And on Sunday 4 June we'll bring you a list of all the winners, but the headline won't give anything away as to who won which award.

I'm interested to know your thoughts.

British Soap Awards will NOT be shown live on TV

The British Soap Awards takes place this coming Saturday 3 June at the Lowry in Salford.

It was going to be shown live on ITV but that has now changed.  It will not be shown live, it will be shown recorded on Tuesday 6 June at 8pm instead.

The reason for the move is that the Britain's Got Talent Final has moved to Saturday 3 June instead of Sunday 4 June so as not to clash with Ariana Grande's 'One Love Manchester' benefit concert.

The official statement from ITV reads: "Ariana Grande's 'One Love Manchester' benefit concert is bringing artists and the public together, and will raise funds for the Red Cross's Manchester Emergency Fund. ITV and Britain's Got Talent have no desire to distract from this important cause, so we have taken the decision to move the Britain's Got Talent Final from Sunday night."

More Heartbreak Ahead for Corrie's Daniel

There's more trouble for Daniel coming next week in Coronation Street when he splits up with Sinead. He's not had a happy life since he returned to Weatherfield, has he?

This week's Inside Soap magazine reveals that the's heartbreak ahead for Daniel when Sinead dumps him.  Since falling for Daniel, she's been caught up in more drama than she expected. Well, she wanted an exciting life, leaving poor old Chesney, didn't she? And look where it got her! She's only got herself to blame, I say.

She tells Daniel that being with him is doing her reputation no good, and she's concerned that she knows very little about his background too.

Is Daniel better off without her? I say yes, he is.

Heartbroken Gail rages at Leanne in Coronation Street

Gail is going to have a few words to say to Leanne next week in Coronation Street, when she finds out what's happened to Nick.

In this week's fab Inside Soap magazine, they tell us that Gail will be devastated at the loss of her golden boy Nick. And she's going to pin the blame squarely with Leanne.

With Leanne equally distraught by Nick's absence, she's mortified when Gail lays into her and makes no bones about the fact that with Nick now gone, she doesn't want to be involved with Leanne or her baby Oliver either.

With Nick gone, Leanne is left to bring up Oliver as a single mum with his dad Steve always looking over her shoulder.
