There doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground regarding spoilers - people have strong views on them - and we want to you know YOURS.
As editor of the Coronation Street Blog, I LOVE SPOILERS and gather them up from the tabloids and sprinkle them liberally on the blog. It's something I've done since the blog started back in 2007. But should it continue this way?
I ask becuase I know a lot of Corrie fans don't like to know what's going to happen too far in advance. And oh boy, they let me know! They complain, they email, they leave nasty comments. And I understand, I really do.
So what I've been thinking about is setting up a seperate blog JUST FOR SPOILERS. These will be the spoilers that are taken from the tabloids, the paparazzi pictures, that kind of thing. We'll mention here on the Coronation Street Blog whenever a new spoiler has been posted, but we won't say what it is, we'll just link to it. These spoiler alerts will also come through on our Facebook and Twitter, but will give nothing away. You can choose whether you click on them to read them or not. How does that sound?
What will still be posted to this blog are those previews we call spoilers, but aren't true spoilers. They are the previews for the next week of Coronation Street as released by ITV and available in all the soap mags, telly guides and so on. Those will still be posted and will still be called spoilers. How does that sound?
Please let me know your thoughts. Would two blogs be messy and complicated to keep track off for fans to follow? Are you happy with the way things are at the moment? I'm waiting to hear from you all.

ReplyDeleteIs it possible to put text behind a spoiler cut on this blog? That way, you can keep your content all in one place, but those who don't want to read spoilers don't have to see them unless they choose to click behind the cut.

ReplyDeleteI live in Canada so almost everything is a spoiler. But it seems your blog titles are clear so those who don't want to be "spoiled" can refrain from clicking on the spoilers. Please keep the same.

ReplyDeleteMostly you warn of spoilers in the post titles, but occasionally there's one that gives the game away without opening it. I think there was one recently that just stated that Gina was the stalker. I try to avoid them, and don't read the posts that are spoilers, easy!

Love the spoilers!!. The Corrie.net posts on a Monday are always a treat. Maybe just publish the spoilers purely on corrie.net instead?.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the spoilers are often headlined as such so quite easy to avoid?. A good idea maybe as a separate blog, but I'm a fan either way.
I like to keep up-to-date, though I rarely miss an episode anyway :)
It's a bit of messing around though. I'd prefer as is but in fact, on the Bluenose Blog, now and then I put a post up and use the character name linked to this blog for the spoiler. that might be what you could do if you're linking to the other blog, so the reader knows which character/s the spoiler affects.
ReplyDeleteI have a love/hate relationship with spoilers but I feel it's the need for choice. Sometimes there are posting where in the title the spoiler is given away rather than just 'spoiler for an upcoming story'... there is, therefore, no choice in not knowing. Separating it completely seems like too much work... just simply making sure that the spoilers are hidden in a way that unless the reader wants to know would be most appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI think the two might get a bit messy. I do enjoy spoilers and love reading them, but do like to be surprised too, like when no-one knows until it airs and shocks everyone.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if keeping the single page, if there is a big spoiler, just have the header as 'MAJOR SPOILER: NAME' and replace name with whichever character it is and nothing more. That way if people want to read it they need to click the article, but those who don't want to know can just scroll past it.
Just for clarity - to Ryan - the spoilers go live on corrie.net each Tuesday morning at the 7am embargo time which ITV give to all publications. These will still go live here on the Coronation Street Blog, as outlined in the blog post above, hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteI like spoilers. As long as a warning is included in a post title or ahead of a paragraph containing one, I think that's good enough.
ReplyDeleteIf this were a paid service and you were salaried, it would be nice to have all the extras. As it isn't and you are not, I think we need to find the balance between simple for you and workable for us.
ReplyDeleteI do not like spoilers and try to avoid them, but I know others love them. I can skip them but, as several others have noted, it's hard when the spoiler is in the subject line. Also, as I usually read the blog on Safari for IOS, you can only move to the next article by going to the bottom of the current page. You see the pictures, so even if you don't read the text, story spoiled. With non-revealing headlines and photos pushed to the bottom, what would work for me is an additional set of Next-Home-Previous buttons at the top of each page. If you could add that to your page template, it would do the trick for me and should be easy for you.
Sorry abby, you say that sheould be easy for us, but I'm afraid it's not possible. As you said, we're not salaried and it's not a paid service, I'm trying my best.

DeleteHi, FN. I like the spoilers, and would prefer one page only, but will understand if you decide to make two. I find that it is just as easy to accidentally come across spoilers on newspaper websites, so it doesn't bother me if they are on here.

I like the blog as it is too. I can understand those who don't like spoilers, but I think a separate blog would be too fussy and complicated in general. I thought we were seeing a trend towards less spoilers with the new show-runner, but it seems to have reverted back, with the odd surprise now and then.
ReplyDeleteI read the spoilers, my choice, but I also love the shock when Corrie drops the unexpected surprise every so often. Being a Manc, I read the Manchester Evening News website, and there's always Corrie spoilers on there, with no warning, straight into the storyline, so I don't think I'd be able to avoid them if I tried. Keep up the good work. I'm not bothered about Anonymous posts, sometimes they make more controversial reading and make me smile

ReplyDeleteI find that even with the spoilers the story does not play out exactly. They tease and you wonder how can so and so do that. Then you see it performed and it its like Oh now that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there are so many ways the internet offers spoilers anyway that it is almost impossible to avoid them.
If there is a show coming up that I know is going to have a significant event I try to avoid Facebook and the internet in general until I watch that specific show....otherwise I enjoy spoilers.
Bottom line....do not create more work for yourselves...if you do then this will become a chore and you or the site will suffer.
Please know that you cannot please everyone and keep doing as you have been. Your loyal followers will stay.
