With thanks to Corriepedia, we know that Denise Osbourne left Weatherfield in 1996 and started having an affair with her brother-in-law Brian. Ken ordered Denise to leave, so she left with Brian and abandoned Daniel with Ken. Then, Denise, Daniel and Brian moved to Scotland in 1997 and lost contact with Ken. Sometime later, Denise broke up with Brian and moved back to Manchester with Daniel.
In 2007, Denise sent a card to Ken after learning that Tracy had been sent to prison for murder. Ken went to stay with Denise after experiencing problems with Deirdre. Ken stayed with Denise for a few weeks and although Daniel grew frustrated at his father's presence, Denise became closer and made a pass at Ken. However, Ken turned her down and later returned to Deirdre after a reconciliation.
Her final line, to Ken, was: "Good luck with Deirdre."
Since leaving Coronation Street, actor Denise Black has most recently been starring in rival soap Emmerdale as Joanie Dingle - who has just been killed off there.
Does this mean, we wonder (and hope) that Denise Black might be free to return to Coronation Street as Daniel's mum?
I'd love to see her return to Corrie and I've got my fingers crossed.

she definitely should come back even if just to solve the mystery of Denise's disappearance.
ReplyDeleteI love Denise Black - she's a superb actress. But they've now made such a big fuss about her disappearing and abandoning Daniel that having her come back now would seem way too convenient. It'd be like Fiz talking about her long lost Uncle Monty and then the next week - look who's arrived, Uncle Monty! After years of not hearing a word from her to have her appear would seem contrived.
ReplyDeleteBetter to give it a couple of years, when Daniel's properly bedded in and a part of the Street. Her return would have more shock value then, especially if she came back to tell us that Daniel hadn't told the whole truth...
can someone please clarify why if Denise took Daniel to live in Scotland he came back without an accent, but Adam, who has been living in Canada for many years, has a Scottish accent? Did I miss something???
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see Denise come back. It would steer the story away from evil Phelan who I am sick of. Storylines really drag on. Seeing Denise come back would be a breath of fresh air.
ReplyDeleteDaniel was only in Scotland for a few years, then moved back to Manchester, so he gradually acquired a local accent (possibly to fit in, rather than be an outsider with his Scottish accent.) Adam was in Scotland until the age of 13 when his mother died, so would have a pronounced Scottish accent. Although he then moved to Weatherfield to live with his father Mike Baldwin, he stayed at his Glasgow boarding school which meant he would keep the accent. But I do think that after several years in Portsmouth and then Canada his accent would no longer be so strong.
ReplyDeletethe Scottish accent can't be very contagious: Peter and Susan Barlow moved to Scotland when they were about 6 and they spent the rest of their childhood there. But not even the faintest of brogues ...
DeleteI would love to see Denise come back, I always liked her. And I'm grateful for the reminder of how her story went, because for the life of me I don't remember a brother-in-law called Brian or her exit storyline. So much water under the bridge :-)
ReplyDeleteIn my experience, with my Scottish family: those that moved from Scotland to Canada during early school years (attended elementary school here in Canada) deliberately lost their Scottish accents to fit in with the Canadian kids.
ReplyDeleteOther family members who came to Canada as adults or to only attend 1 final year of highschool, still have their accents, some 55+ years later.
So according to that, Anon 11:50, Peter should be speaking with a broad Scottish accent.
ReplyDeleteI certainly remember one incarnation of Peter, years ago, who came to visit Ken and he did have a Scottish accent.
ReplyDeleteMost children who emigrate to new countries usually loose their accent quickly due to the fact that they want to fit in with their peers and not appear as the outsiders.
ReplyDeleteBoth Peter and Susan were played by actors with Scottish accents around the time they left school / uni, and in real life that would be established, though they'd probably tone it down a bit once they were living in England permanently. But I suspect that when the writers wanted Peter or Susan to be in Corrie long term, there weren't any Scottish actors of the right age available. ..
