Roy and Cathy's road to the altar was paved with much rockier material than a few cobbles. Roy promised his late wife, Hayley, that he would move on and find someone to love and Cathy seemed to be the one. We viewers were pretty sure he didn't love her, not like he loved Hayley in any case but they did seem suited. When they got closer, when the proposal finally came, it felt rushed to me, and probably to all of you, too. It felt like Roy was backed into a corner and he seemed to bend to Cathy's wishes a lot.
Then the wedding planning began and Roy's stress levels rose higher and higher. Still, Cathy couldn't see the obvious, so wrapped up in her own happiness and enthusiasm over the wedding of her dreams. But the bride had a few wobbles and thought they should call it all off. She didn't mean it, she wanted him to reassure her but he snapped at the chance only to find himself rebooking wedding arrangements that he hastily cancelled.
So the wedding day dawns and while the bride is on top of the world, the groom looks like he wants the bottom of the world to swallow him up. He kind of got his wish because the bride discovered recorded proof that he didn't want to get married and was only going through with it because he's an honourable man. She did the right thing and released him from that promise though I think she was hoping he'd persuade her to marry him. Roy being Roy didn't pick up on that, or didn't want to. They are not wed and it doesn't look like they will be.
Roy had taken his old wedding band off earlier in the day but it's back firmly in place in that comfortable, familiar spot. There will be no new Mrs. Cropper. The old Mrs. Cropper still has his heart.

I for one am glad. Not a fan of Cathy and Alex and hopefully this will see the back of the pair of them.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with post above
ReplyDeleteIf it was just Cathy I think I would have been ok with it, even though it was rushed. Then Alex got thrown into the mix, with all the Nessa/Dead Husband Affair thrown in and it just became too much, too soon. I think we were all feeling backed into a corner along with Roy!
ReplyDeleteSounds like the writers saw that the public wasn't really on board with this story.
I don't feel that Cathy and Alex have to leave the show though. It would be nice if they gave those characters lives outside of the Café though.
Relieved he didn't get married to Cathy.
ReplyDeleteThe writing for Cathy has never been there. Hayley was introduced in a similar way, for Roy to interact with. But there was controversy and, of course, two actors who did well together. Also, Hayley went to work at the factory and made friends etc - that helped her for in.
ReplyDeleteCathy hasn't had nearly enough of this.
I don't know where they are going with this story (not a fan of this producer, so who knows/cares?) - but Roy had many chances to call the relationship off, ask Cathy to leave etc, and each time, he wanted her (Alex) to stay.
He and Hayley had a far from perfect relationship - was it 3/4 times they wanted to call it quits (Christian debacle etc)? And Both of them unable to waiver in the las months of her life.
But that's drama, that's the pettiness and greatness of life.
The real tragedy in this story is if they don't show Roy able to accept his loss and go on with life.
Isn't that what his life with Hayley taught him? Of course, he can't love Cathy as Hayley, they're not the same people. When a spouse dies, you have to make compromises or seek out different things.
Roy, alone, in the shop parlaying a few interesting facts now and then is not what I want to see. But Roy, with his own family (not a teenager who stays for 6 months and leaves) is!
The writing needs to be better.
